Hi All,

I’m currently cycling my tank. One of the future fish I would like to buy is a yellow tang. I know most people do lights off whilst cycling but am I better off cycling with lights on to bring on algae growth considering I’m looking at getting a yellow tang?

Any thoughts would be appreciated :)

Congrats on the new system!

I'd still cycle with lights off. As soon as you turn the lights on, algae will grow anyway.

Also, Yellow Tangs (or any tang, for that matter) do not need nuisance algae to thrive - you can provide for their herbivorous need with nori (dried seaweed). Footage of my tang enjoying some nori below, I use the Two Little Fishies Seaveggie Clip (https://amzn.to/4c3eRmy)

Yellow tang will eat algae even bubble algae. Algae will grow as soon as you add light to your tank. No need to hurry. Just cycle for a week or 2 without light
