Yellow Tang Attacking Blue Tang need advice

hey guys, so ive had my yellow tang in 100g for about a half a year or so shes about the size of a silver dollar got her as a tiny baby, well last night friend of mine got me a baby blue tang about the same size as the yellow tang while taking her home she was laying done in the bag looked weird once i got her home into the tank she dove for little cave between the sand and rock " yellow tangs hiding spot " been laying sideways there the yellow tang keeps going there and wagging her tail so i turned the lights off for the night hoping it improves today...

yes i am 100g is smallish for a blue tang and yellow tang their small enough to enjoy the space will ge them a bigger home when its time.

Take the yellow tang out put it in another tank, or temp store at lfs. This helps so the yellow tang does not have a territorial need to pick on the other tang. I have always added my yellows last so they dont develop that. Sometimes though it is unavoidable so dont be hard on yourself!!!

crap i dont really have another tank and my QT system is down sadly returning the fish makes me want to cry haha

Chase yellow around with a net, scare him. Try to do it off and on for a bit. Feed a bunch a times a day. Use seaweed clip. Try to distract yellow guy by putting another rock in tank, change something to distract him. In my experience it might take a couple of days before they will ignore each other. Distract!!

Typically they will hold the fish for you if they are nice enough. The above ideas could work only concerning have is potential stress that can cause ick for your hippo more so then the yellow tang. Just my 2 cents. I noticed like mentioned above is they do typically ignore each other after a few days. Had that happen with my yellow tang and kole tang.

+1 on temporary removing yellow tang. Do you have room in the sump?
+1 on distracting the yellow tang with food.

Depending on the length of your tank, rearranging the rock work to break line of sight and creating new territories.

So many problem threads start this way, with spouse, friend, girlfriend, whatever, buying a fish as a "gift" when the DT is not ready for it and QT is not setup. I am really not trying to scold here, but I wonder whether mere aggression is the best you can hope for?

Pets make terrible surprise presents, whether a puppy under the Christmas tree or a friend with a bag of fish.

well i have all my fish treated for ich in copper quarantines for 6 weeks havent seen ich in months since adding them

He’s just saying Hippo’s get it more frequently then others, but usually if you feed enriched food often it shouldn’t be a concern.

Two things have worked for me in situations like this. First, as others have said, use a mirror taped to the front of the tank. The bigger the better (I have one that goes all the way across the front). They will get so distracted with themselves, they forget about anything else for a while, and I swear they think they win and are in a new tank when you take it away. You can do that for several days usually, just make sure they are still eating and not exhausting themselves too much. Second, consider getting a piece of cheap acrylic, drill some holes in it and use it to divide off a section of the tank (even just a corner) where you can have one of them hang out for a week or so. This let's them see each other and get familiar, while causing no harm. Doing both of these things is often a good idea.

Do not chase and stress it.
3 things you can do to change his behavior:
- Move all landscape around, even if its temporary. Tang will be more interested in a new hiding place than the new occupant
- You can place a mirror for 1/2 hour every two hours and it will see itself thinking its another yellow and become preoccupied with that imaginary yellow tang
- remove and place in bucket with air stone and small light (even desk lamp and give it a 24-48 hr time out) or purchase an acclimation box and tang can remain in display tank but confined from being a bully

can even try to just leave the net in the tank near his area for a day or so to kinda throw him off. Has worked for me before. Will take a day or so before they drop it.
