yellow tang cracks along head around eye

He came out of a 30 day copper at 2ppm and had some red spots near tail. The cracks and some more red spots have developed today. A dart fish died in the same tank two days ago but didnt show any signs of redness or cracked scales. Also other fish in tank (orange shoulder ,flame angel and six line)show no signs of stress This is a 40g hospital tank so it's only been up for about two weeks seeded with instant oceaon bio spira. Amonia badfe shows no ammonia. I did 5 gallon water change and started feeding metroplex and focus just in case.

Any idea whats happening to my buddy?

Looks like HLLE from the copper treatment. My LFS guys says that some fish, like hippo tangs, are sensitive to this when in copper for too long. I don't have personal experience with this. Hopefully someone will chime in.

it looks really similar its been about 7 days since they've come out out of copper. HLLE doesnt sound to bad since its not life threatening.
ive lost one fish through this whole qt ordeal and id hate to loose this guy too.

Yellow tangs seem to get facial erosion pretty quickly. It can be due to a number of causes.
I would do a much more aggressive water change and get a test kit for ammonia, nitrates and nitrites. The badge can be unreliable and even if ammonia isn’t present it could be a spike in nitrites or other issues with water quality that’s triggering the cracks - that’s been my personal experience with yellow tangs. Any spikes and stress seem to trigger the facial erosion. The good news is this is usually easily reversed if caught before it gets too bad. I’m interested to see the redness around his tail. Redness could be an infection. Do you have a picture of this baby’s tail area? How long ago did the redness start?

Quarantine is so frustrating...I feel your pain. I almost lost one of my yellow tangs but he’s doing fine now. Don’t lose hope

ill have to clean the glass and get a better picture tomorrow. hes easy to spook and i have to sit very still in order to get a good picture. i have salifert test kits but they only recognize .5ppm of ammonia where the badge does at .05ppm i had a badge detect ammonia in one of my qt's during my copper dosing so i have some faith in them lol. when the badge detected amonia the kit did not. ill definitely test anyways cant hurt ill also test for nitrates too.

my 180g has been in fallow for almost 40 days now and i never would have thought running all these small tanks would be more work lol.i miss the old days of a water change once a month and mixing calc/alk

I feel ya...having a bunch of small qt tanks is a TON of work. I almost cried with joy when I broke down 4 qt tanks recently. Keep us posted on this sweet baby. He actually looks pretty good

Are you soaking a few drops of selcon or other liquid vitamins to the nori? May help with the hlle

I’d be more concerned about the red spots/bleeding than a bit of HLLE. Latter will heal on its own, former may not. I reject the whole prophylactic copper thing .... I think it does more harm than good. I’d be treating with an antibiotic ASAP.

i treated with kanaplex in the water and metroplex/focus in food and two days later hes looking much better. I did a 10gal water change and following instructions on the kanaplex, dosed the water again since he still has some red around the tail. the first picture is how he looked last night and the second pic is tonight.

Awww!!! I’m so glad to hear he’s looking better! He’s gorgeous. Keep up with what you’re doing and do lots of water changes. It’s a pain in the butt but the better quality water he has, the better chance he has of making a full recovery.
