My yellow tang I bought three weeks ago at OG11 died last night. He was young meaning small, but he was very active and swimming around yesterday morning when I saw him last. This morning I checked on the tank and he was laying on the bottom. I checked some of parameters this morning and ph is 8.5, nitrates around 20, nitrites 0. Wil check others when I get home today. Will do a water change also. Looking for reasons why he would die off after seeming to be doing well, eating and everything.

How long did you have him in the tank?

Sorry to hear about it, yellows are particularly hardy so let me ask you a few questions...

How long has your tank been set up and what size is the tank? How much rock to water volume is there? When you say small, roughly what size is it in inches? Was there any other fish or inverts in there? Do you control your temperature?

There are so many reasons that fish die. It is almost impossible to determine the cause in most cases. You have to remember alot of times after they are taken from there natural habitat they are shipped from one place to another and this causes stress. Most aquariest recommend quaratine so if problems arise they can be medicated.

+1 on that!!

Tang was about 2 inches and had been in tank for three weeks. He looked and acted healthy was eating and everything. Fed Nori. Temp in water is 77 check that every other day. Checked again yesterday. It is a 55 which my LFS said would be okay because he is small. I was planning to upgrade within the next two years before he outgrew it. I am trying to get some ideas as to to repeat this. Buying a tank this weekend to use as a quarantine.
