Yellow tang eating zoas

Found out today that my yellow tang that I have had for over a year decided to start eating my nirvana zoa colony . Now I have to try and get him out of the tank. Any advice would help.

If he eats out of your hand or comes up to the surface that’s the easiest time to catch them.
I’ve found giving more nori stops nipping though that’s just my experience

I feed him everyday but hes still being a ___ hole . I think I will have to order a fish trap and try to catch him

Thanks I will give it a go, would hate to have to take the rocks out to catch him.

A good fish trap like aquamedic's or similar should make it trivial. Just feed in the trap exclusively or if he has a favorite like seaweed, put that in there and just pull the string when he comes in (mine doesn't even need food to get curious). Wrasses are a completely different story

Keep the tang, ditch the zoa's. Let Mother Nature do her thing. On a more serious note it really comes down to the hobbyist and what is acceptable to them. In my case, in a similar situation, my Lavender and Scopas tangs both eat zoas. Coral Beauty also. Not sure who started it but somehow the memo spread and everything thinks they are skittles. Back to what is acceptable.

To me, it is more acceptable to have the tangs utility in managing algae than it is to have colorful dots throughout my tank. So my vote is if the tang is doing his/her job in algae control keep it.

Thanks hyprc , hope he goes for the trap. My tank was getting to the point where it was looking and doing great then I woke up one morning to watch my tang ripping my zoas apart . So he's got to go. Will put him in the sump until I can find him a home

I would love to keep the tang , but my tank is 90% zoas .

My YT developed a liking for my open brain and acan echinata a few months after being added and even after being fed upwards of 6 times a day, he still goes straight back to picking at his favorite corals right after grabbing some 'real' food.

Tried the fish but didn't work so had to take out rocks and finally caught him. My LFS took him and walked away with some corals so it worked out. Kind of miss him was a cool fish.

Show me a yellow tang that's not an A$#hole. They drink your favorite beverage, watch all of your shows you have on DVR
then they pretend to get sick with chicken pox and won't let you catch them so you can give them something to cure that chicken pox. Yellow tangs are just A$#holes but I love them

What are you feeding your Yellow now? Maybe it has a deficiency in something.... is it getting plenty of green Nori?

i had the same thing happen. once he has a taste for them, it's over, he's got to go... try a fish trap, but when all else failed, I got cruel, don't report me to animal cruelty but I got so frustrated from not being able to catch him, moving rock work around, him eating hundreds of dollars of zoas and other corals, that I waited until he was asleep and blinded him with my laser, I kept it up until he was visible stunned then it was easy to net him. he's got to go ...
