Today my tang looks different then just a few days ago. He is the only tang I have in the 110gal tank. What might be going on with him. I have noticed that he is not eating the seaweed. I have been putting in. He bits it then let it go to the overflow. He use to go at like nothing else.

Are you running carbon?

I’ve noticed the over use of carbon causing deterioration of fins and later line disorder. Try using some other type of algae like spirulina,chrorella, or kelp flake if they don’t eat the sheets

The "after" picture doesn't help with out a "before" picture to compare it to.

What exactly are you referencing in the picture? Overall, the color does seem to be washed out.

Also, please post a complete set of water test results. I'm noticing a patch of your Zoas are clamped shut.

The spots where his fins are see though. He never had that before. Top by his head and lower back fin.

Yeah... I thought that was what you were referencing.

I took a small pump to the tank to blow off the rocks. Everything is a little closed up. But as you were asking I was doing water tests.

Alk = 8.6 at 46.4ml a day

Cal= 556 high but alk and cal are at the same ML dose per day. brs two part.

Mag = 1500 is at a 0.8ml dos per day

Sorry... I didn't mean to side track the conversation, but when I looked at the picture, and saw the Zoas, I thought there might be something else going on.

Yes, your calcium is a bit above textbook recommendations, but it will be consumed over time. I wouldn't take any action.

Yes I just switch out my carbon a week ago. Put 1 cup of new into it. I can turn that off.

I would discontinue the carbon in the mean time. I find the use of carbon can have negative effects on fish especially if over used or used in media reactors where they are tumbling. Best used sparingly and in a media bag in a low flow area. I recently switched all my reef aquariums from carbon to Purigen and it seems to work great

I suck at this, but looks kinda like HLLE to me. Seriously, wait for someone experienced to chime in.

Hello,

It does look like HLLE starting. He looks a bit pale too. Not sure about the fin. Wondering what you are feeding. I am not a big believer that carbon cause this

Maybe, maybe not. I’m in the aquarium maintenance business and a lot of clients that I take over from other providers have this problem often. Typically when I take over I notice an abundance of carbon being used. The clients that I have from the beginning of a new setup don’t have this problem. I rarely use carbon any more and prefer purigen for organic reduction. It could be dietary as well. Maybe try using a good pellet food and soak them with vitamin c, garlic, and Hufas on alternating days. Although this won’t usually repair damages already done, it may prevent the continuation of this problem and give the fishes immune system a good boost

Discolored fish indicates malnutrition or some sort of stress.

Definitely HLLE present. Which if using carbon, that could be the culprit.

Post up your tank parameters and nutrient levels so we can take a look.

I also agree running carbon 24/7 can cause more harm than good. Running it for a few days here or there to clear up the water is not an issue if necessary. We love crystal clear Aquariums. There is such a thing as a tank top clean for more reasons than 1.

So I have my tank parameters
Alk = 8.6 at 46.4ml a day

Cal= 556 high but alk and cal are at the same ML dose per day. brs two part.

Mag = 1500 is at a 0.8ml dos per day

Yes I have stoped the cabin reactor. I can just just it when the water needs a small cleanup. Or if I have something I jeed to get out of the water.

I also stoped at the LFS where I got the tang asked what and when they feed. Bought two foods I did not have. Was also told to feed the see weed more often. I will be giving these a try see if that can help.

Thank you for the information. Guess I needed a good back to the basic of feeding.

I have several tangs. My 180 sized RSR has 8 in it. It consumes 2 entire 8"X8" sheets per day. To give you an idea. A 4" yellow tang can easily eat 1/4 sheet on it's own.

I also offer a huge mix of frozen to my tank but it's mixed with several types of fish. So there is a little something for everyone ;)

I make food once a week. Over a dozen types of frozen sheets and cubes. Thaw, strain, add selcon, vitachem etc. Keep refrigerated or frozen until feeding. The vitamins will really help in your case.
