Yellow tang Velvet

Currently have
Convict tang, yellow tang, 4 clowns in QT

40b QT running @ 1.7 copper . Been raising .5 every day. Yellow tang has ich/velvet

All fish breathing normal but yellow tang. Do young just breathe harder ? Everyone is eating but him. He was eating till today


Ammonia is 0

Do I need to ramp up copper faster or ?? Please advise any good action. He eats pellets sometimes if they fall in his face

Is that a biota? May have one from the same batch, mine looks like it’s breathing heavy sometimes but nothing major so could be normal. No signs of ich or velvet on mine. Keep nori for them to graze on

Why would you think it has velvet? And coming from biota it was good and in a sterile system till you housed it with other fish… seems like you’re stressing him for no reason in my opinion.

Okay , I posted pictures to see if anyone saw anything abnormal aside from the velvet. I’m going to keep raising copper as he has many dots covering him

He hasn’t touched the nori since I put him in. Only pellets and he did eat mysis a couple times

Your yellow tang could have gotten something else from your other fish - the golden rule is 'don't quarantine fish from different sources together' - I would say especially with the tank raised tangs. The person that said biota tank should not have velvet - ignores the fish its in with. Showing a kind of misunderstanding of QT. Troylee - I'm not sure anyone here me included has an idea as to how these fish to be treated - how are you the miraculous savior with the answer?

Okay , I posted pictures to see if anyone saw anything abnormal aside from the velvet. I’m going to keep raising copper as he has many dots covering him

The convict would be the problem here and not sure where he got it from, I’ve lost 3 in a week and gave up on them. . biota yellow tangs come from a very sterile environment and shouldn’t have any problems..

Yes, mixing a Biota tang with wild caught fish leaves them susceptible to any diseases the wild fish have. Convicts don't do well for a lot of people (including me) so I've avoided them for years.

I presume your using coppersafe or copper power and a Hanna meter. No need to ramp up slowly, not sure where you heard that. The copper won't begin treating any protozoans until it hits 2.0 ppm or so. Taking longer just allows the disease gain a stronger foothold. Then, because these amine-based copper products are so mild, they are also slow to work. I've seen people lose fish while ramping up the copper (ugh).

The water looks a bit murky - are you monitoring ammonia?

It is pretty common for juvenile Zebrasoma tangs to only want to eat meaty seafoods and may ignore nori all together.

I monitor ammonia with 2 badges( one on each side of QT and both are yellow, I occasionally test with redsea kit) I test copper with Hanna checker.

My Last convict stopped eating and died. I finally got one that is a pig and eats anything (hopefully that continues)


I was considering doing a 30% WC as I haven’t in a 3-4 days


Copper is currently 1.7 ppm I’ll ramp up to 2ppm now . Hoping I can get this guy to eat by tonight or tomorrow or else I’m sure he’s a goner. All my fish are fine but him. No bullying is going on

That isn't a reaction to copper, you aren't even at a full dose yet. Yellow tangs are prone to "septicemia" (a misnomer) where their skin gets red blotches. It may be bacterial, as a secondary infection to the protozoan parasites. It can also be a reaction to poor water quality. It may be inconsequential - these small tangs really show any skin changes very clearly.

Thankfully it does not appear that way. Today waking up he still is moving like normal, breathing the same but still has the red spot on his head . It hasn’t gone worse but he still hs ich/velvet.

Ramping up to 2.25 now

Here and there the convict will push him but it is never constant or consistent. Only usually when I turn the white light on to feed

I’ll keep watching them though

More fin tear. He is being pestered by another fish. I’m going to put him in his own bin

He is eating now and active

Nevermind. I’m not as worried anymore. I just found a picture of my last one just a bit bigger when I got him… he looked just as bad and ended up like this 6m later

So he’s back to normal today. I had him isolated in a box, had to take him out cus he was flashing everywhere wanting more space.

I let him out, fed mysis. Didn’t care for it. Fed pellets and eating like a pig. He’s also a lot more yellow now

Seems like he’s more apart of the gang again



Edit: velvet/ich is gone now. Treating for 12 days @ 2.5 copper

Then transferring to a new tank for another 12 days @ 2.5 copper then I’ll put in observation
