Hey everyone, im not new to saltwater tanks, but i have run into a new problem i havent had before.

Heres the story: one of my neighboors tore down her tank a few weeks back, and one of the fish she couldnt get rid of was her yellow tang. small little guy, about 3'', in great shape, minus the small amount of HLLE on his face and down his side. i QT the sucker for about 4 weeks, and during that time i fed green and red seaweed soaked in Selcon. it seemed like he was real stressed from QT, so i moved him into my DT (100g). im just curious what else, if anything i should do to cure his hlle. i cant really tell if its getting better or not, its hard to tell... he shares a tank with 3 green cromis, and my juvi snowflake eel. i feed my cromis cyclopyeze, pellets, and a varied type of flakes, and will feed mysis soon. if the tang catches onto feeding on items other than seaweed, will he be ok?...

Just looking for some opinions, never had a tang / dealt with HLLE before, so i need some advice :)

First are you running carbon? If yes, make sure it is rinsed well before putting it into the tank. Also try make sure it isn't able to move around and cause dust to be released.

Second try feeding a good mysis or enriched brine soaked in selcon and garlic. It will help improve the eating responses and should help cure the hlle.

Tangs being herbivores Feeding a varying diet of Nori and gracillia would be best as well as him eating the algae in the tank. Marine herbivore flakes and max in some variety of frozen herbivore diet along with your normal carnivorous feedings. The tang can survive on carnivorous foods but its best to keep him eating as much plant life as possible. Keep your tank parameters as good as possible and give it time. hlle is caused by poor water conditions and insufficient diet from what I understand.

Presoaking food in vitamin suppliments along with extra iodine will help in treating it.. as stated on this link which is a great jump point to many FAQ's on wet web media. If you haven't read through these i would suggest it. There is alot of varying stages of hlle represented and suggested treatments or points which may have caused it to start.

Just good info to have even for those without a fish with hlle.

i think you already have the right idea - feed the tang well and ensure the water parameters are up to snuff and you should be ok. Selcon and the seaweed and getting PE mysis to supplement the cyclopeeze -all that is great.

Frankly i didn't even think hlle is reversible, that is, the tang will be healthy robust but will always have the scars on the head. But maybe others who have brought the fish back can chime in.

From what I understand is the HLLE holes will regrow flesh and yes there will be some discoloration (scars) but otherwise totally healthy. I to hope someone who has successfully battles HLLE will chime in I love success stories.
