I am getting my new tank which is 5feet long by 3Feet wide.....About how many yellow tangs do you think I could get away with and have them healthy and not super stressed? I was hoping on being able to add 3 (all at the same time).....any thoughts or experiences?

I think tangs are kind of aggressive toward tangs of same species, I could be wrong though.

you could do 3 if added at the same time. but your tang diversity is shot due to bioload.

Haha right....I have a blue hippo for 3 years now and that's my only tang right now...if I did get the 3 yellows i was gonna do them at the same time and obviously get no more tangs....I just don't want them fighting all the time either...the tank is 5feet long but I figured since it was 3 feet wide t would be a lot of surface area for them and territory

gallons?

just as a reference i have only 4 tangs in my 265.

Okay I gotcha....So my tank is gonna be 165 or 170 I think...it's more of a shallow tank ...only 18in tall

Some have gotten away with having more than one yellow at a time in a small tank like yours. I tried it several times in my old 125 6' long tank. I to this day do not have a yellow tang.

you would be stretching it. ive heard it being done, but generally you gotta know what is up.

Okay thanks for the advice...I might just get one then and do three different types of tangs or something then

Tammy at Fins and frags in Cullman had a group of 3 small yellows she wanted to sell yesterday when I was there.

I have 5 Zebrasomas (3 flavescens [medium yellow tangs]and 2 xanthurum [medium purple tangs]) in my 300gal tank. They were all added at the same time. Aggression varies, but never disappeared completely IME. They are all well, eating and growing, and none got hurt so far (about 6 months). This tank has plenty caves so they can hide if needed. As far as I know, there are many people with more than one Zebrasoma spp in their tanks without major problems. It is recommended to add all at the same time.

Hey, there is a trio on Divers den currently.

sup gwitness how u been man?? IMO if you get a trio who have been together like off DD your odds of success will go way up. that would be it for any other fish ever tho I'd imagine they wouldnt allow it.

I have 365g in the works, but I currently have 4 tangs in a 4ft 120 with no issues. chevron, naso, YT, and a moorish idol not a tang I know but close.

it's also going to be a matter of food too they are all algae grazers so make sure u have plenty of that every day.

I would try the trio. Worst case scenario is that bit doesnt work. Fish 2 out amd rehome. YT are pretty popular and it wouldn't be hard to find someone to take one off your hands. A trio would loom amazing as long as they got along, but you'll always have little "spats" with tangs. But as long as doesnt escalate past that I wouldn't worry.

Do you think divers den is selling them as a trio cause they school together?
They sell yellow tang trios often.
