Yellow tangs- what the heck w prices?

Hi,
I lost my yellow tang recently. Went to get another one- $150 for 2 inch one at my lfs?!! Looked online and $120 range. I think mine was $25 or $30 when I got it. What the heck?!
 
Yep that’s the price now, if you can find one. My LFS said they can’t import them anymore, so where the online sellers get them is beyond me.

I know . . . . what a rip !! I remembered $19.99 3 years agi, then $24.99, then $29.99 then $44.00 and now $80 and up especially since some are now tank raised and I have friends in Hawaii who said, last dive., . there were hundreds- Not like we have a shortage
 
Argh that’s nuts. I miss seeing that yellow iconic flash in my tank. But not $150 miss it. I guess I’ll wait it out.
 
Wow prices in the Bay Area are not that high. 6 weeks ago, $50-$60 at two different local LFS.
 
I'll bump this thread. Lost my YT last night. 1st YT to loose in my DT in 20 years. Prices went from 149.00 earlier this week to 449.00 on live aquaria. And I thought the 149.00 was high. That's over double what I paid for the one that just passed. Guess that was my last Yellow Tang.

Arrghh sorry about your YT... it was 20 years old? My guy is 16 now, still going strong for now (knock on wood), but ya at those sort of prices? Yikes....
 
Just noticed that myself when I was going to post the link to @Biota_Marine on LA.
I need to warn my yellow tang today that he can not die :p . I got him from biota when they first released them and he is a grown up now.

No, he was about 3 years old. But, I've kept several over the years when I've been in and out of the hobby and never lost one. I wished he lived to be 20!!! So sad really. Thanks for the condolences.
Last I looked @Biota_Marine has tank born and raised for around $199.00.
Yeah, I may look into that!! Seems they're around 200$ from most places like you've listed!!!

Yes, thats very true!!! And I'll likely go the captive bred route. Although it seems they're more of a translucent yellow than the wild caught bright yellow. And definitely cheaper than some of my coral purchases!!!

I'm taking out a life insurance policy on my yellow tang :) Maybe even hire some private security.
