Hello. Looking for good advice on QT-ing Yellow Watchman Goby (YW). I got one YWG and one Molly Miller Blenny (MM) yesterday from LFS. The LFS said the YW arrived two days ago.

The I asked the LFS to feed both of them and the MM was eating, but the YW did not eat the Mysis shrimp given to him. The YW looks ok and no visible concern so I still bought the YW and give him a chance.

I put both of them in bare bottom 5 gallons tank. My QT tank set up consists of 5 gallons tank, heater set to 78-79ish, HOB aquaclear filter with sponge and carbon, tiny water pump set to the lowest setting to move the water around, and in-tank UV sterilizer.

I plan to do TTM (tank transfer method) as part of QT process. The MM ate the pellets that I provided, but the YW did not show any interest. The YW occasionally move around the tank. The MM seems to like YW and like to hang out close to YW. No aggression is observed.

Fast forward this morning, I dropped bit of frozen Mysis and only the MM ate.

My questions:
  • Do I need to worry about the YW?
  • Is it normal that he has not shown any interest in eating so far given all the conditions I mentioned above?
  • What else I can try? I am going to try soaking the Mysis in selcon and garlic today, and I will see
  • Should I continue with TTM if the YW still has not eating until day 2 in QT? I have to do first tank transfer on 36 hours marked.
  • Did I make a mistake by purchasing the YW anyway?

Hard to say but I don't know if i would start the ttm if the YM isn't eating. I'm no expert using TTM but if the YM is stressed, I would hold off.

I always got my fish eating using a mix of LRS, mysis and pe pellets soaked in selcon and garlic power. I have a purple firefish that hid in QT observation for a 9 -10 days without eating and is now fat and happy so i wouldn't worry about it too much. I was stressed about it because all I saw for those 9-10 days was its tail sticking out of a hole in a piece of rock.

I trust my LFS where I buy my fish so I start with a week of observation and get them settled in and eating. After the week, I'll start copper & GC protocol. That being said, I am interested in hybrid TTM in the future when i have the time to execute it properly.

Good luck!

do you know if TTM is used for curing ich, OR preventing ich and velvet?

I think you just need to take your time. One thing I was taught is just that and man is it hard. I’m currently doing a QT and wanted to start right away adding copper blah blah blah Because my mentality the sooner I start the sooner it goes into my DT. My buddy advised me to just let the fish settle in. Until you see your fish fully eating which can take a few days to even a week because they might be stressed. THEN wait a few more days to get them on a schedule. Once that’s good then you can start your medications. You don’t want to start meds if your fish aren’t eating. Also you said you have the carbon filter in, you need to take that out. Good luck!

The carbon filter is the one that came with the HOB aquaclear filter. Why I can't use it?

Yeah mine to. I just mentioned that because the carbon filter will remove the meds your putting in defeating the purpose of the quarantine process. Sorry I wasn’t sure if you were using any meds yet that’s why I said that. But if you weren’t then by all means no biggie

here is a link to the version that i will be trying:

Ok. I am getting worried now.
It is day 3 and he has not been eating at all. Not even a bite.

I have tried frozen mysis, brine shrimp, blood worms, and pellets. All soak in garlic and selcon. What else I can do?

Not sure your setup but have you tried adding some sand and maybe a piece of rock to make it feel a little more natural.

What about lighting? I don’t have a dedicated light and just rely on natural light coming in from a nearby window.

Just feed a little. It’s good your your doing different foods to. Just give him a little wait maybe 5 min then take it out don’t leave the food in there scoop out whatever you can with a net then repeat the next day. It’ll eat eventually. Rooting for you man!

He finally ate yesterday :D I was so excited to see that. I dropped the food literally right on his face and he ate majority of the food. I don't know why he does not eat when it is not being fed? Any idea?

My set up is just 10 gallons tank (but I only filled to 5 gallons), Aquaclear filter, heater, UV sterilizer, a tiny wavemaker, some sands in clear tupperware, a T PVC. That's it. I am also dosing Melafix for three days as part of new fish process. No visible damage to the fish. He is not breathing heavy either. He likes to hide behind UV sterilizer or wavermaker.

Yes. I removed the uneaten foods. Like I mentioned above, he ate yesterday quite a lot. But, I had to drop the food right on his face. Any idea why?

I’m not sure..I have a royal gramma in QT right now and I have to almost do the same thing ha whatever isn’t floating I don’t see him eat it. The food just goes to the bottom and he doesn’t touch it. I believe there still not 100 percent comfortable or 2 just not aggressive eaters. Man if you figure that one out let me know ha otherwise as long as you visually see them eat in QT then he will be all good

Good news! This morning I fed him just by dropping the food in, and he ate them. He ate every single of pellets. I dropped more food, and he ate them again. 30 minutes later, I dropped more food in and he ate them again. I am so excited. He is way much better now. I think target feeding him yesterday with selcon and garlic soaked food helped him. Or, the Melafix dosing? I don't know lol.
