Hi everyone,

So, running into a major takeover. Please see the images attached and this short video on You tube: Algae or Dino. When the takeover occurred my phos was undetectable. I was battling turf algea before this and used VIBRANT (never again). I do not have a microscope, I only use RODI water from my fish store. Tank is 1 year old.

Parameters:

35 Salinity
8.3 kh
15 Nitrates
.01 Phosphates
1390 mag
525 calcium

I am dosing MicroBacter7 but not seeing much progress, should I do a back-out? Please tell me what this is taking over the tank.

It does look like green hair algae to me. There maybe others, but GHA sticks out. I would suck it out and get more CUC. Maybe more flow also. I’m not a fan of any chemicals to solve this.

You think its just GHA?
It’s not GHA, it will be complicated to give you a possible id with just the pictures, you may want to investe in a microscope if you would like to identify the species. My first thought looking at some of your residual is that you will need to increase phosphates as soon as possible if you want to get in a path to eradicate the algae/bacteria

Interesting I would have thought dinos with that bubbly, stringy snot look all over. Looks very similar to what mine did which was ostreopsis dinos. there’s probably gha in there too though lol. UV cleared up the dinos for me in about a week or two the 2 times I got it.

I have done so already, manually dosing. I have had a smallish outbreak before. This time, whatever its really taken hold. Also, my corals are being effected, there must be some sort of toxins from whatever this is.

Did it work at raising the phosphates? It could be toxins and it could be phosphate limitation affecting the coral.

This is derbesia often confused with bryopsis. Removal is best accomplished by taking the rock out of tank and placing in a container of tank water. Then you will want to pull as much as you can by hand and discard. With a dental pick or small crochet needle, pull the roots off the rock. YOU MUST GET EVERY ROOT OR IT WILL SIMPLY RETURN @!!3
After you are done return rock to tank and reduce white light intensity and even hours of white light and add the following cleaners which will help with control. These guys will consume bryopsis but not as fast as bryopsis can grow - They will never keep up.
Pin cushion urchin, Chiton snails, pitho crabs, and larger astrea snails

This procedure is not as bad or time consuming as it seems. Assure phosphate levels do not become elevated which helps feed this algae

Thanks Vetteguy! Just to share knowledge, what is the observable difference between derbesia and bryopsis?

The strand like appearance versus the fern like appearance but what makes them similar is the roots and way they grow and lack of cleaners that will not consume it

does that stuff look like a brownish mahogany red colour under blue lighting? I’m wondering if this was the same stuff I used to have in my old tank which also happened to be mixed with dinos lol. I was questioning if it was bryopsis every time I looked at it but could never make out that fern like shape that bryopsis has

depending on spectrums, can appear as violet, green or olive

there's some stringy-ness that can be cyano or dinos ... and it's growing on a base that's largely GHA. it makes the appearance complex.
