Asking questions is how you learn :D

I'm printing with Prusament PETG. It's expensive... but I like it. $30 per KG from Prusa, but you'll wait FOREVER to get it, shipping from the Czech Republic. I ordered this with my new printer, so I was waiting anyway. It's like $60 a KG on Amazon.

This print, according to my slicer, consumes 141 grams of material, or 14% of a roll, or about 4 bucks worth of material, using the $30 per KG number.

There's cheaper filament, Amazon has it for as little as $17 per KG, but IMHO, you get what you pay for... I've had lots of trouble with cheap filament. I buy Prusa, Sainsmart, Hatchbox... You pay a bit more, but have far fewer issues.

Awesome thanks for the response. $4 is not so bad at all. I keep seeing really cool 3d printed stuff I would like. I may have to start some research.

I've been printing for what, 3 years now?

Couple of things I wish someone had told me up front...

1) Learn a good 3D design package. I'm using Fusion360 now, but I started with Sketchup, tried FreeCAD, worked with a couple of others. Learning multiple packages was a huge waste of time. Fusion360 is wonderful, but they keep changing the rules on who can use it for free... So far, so good.

2) Don't buy a cheap printer. I learned this lesson TWICE. Started with an Ender3, think I paid $170 for it or so, on sale. It was a major pain to work with. Ended up giving it away. Bought an FLSun Q5. Better design, more features, but Chinese vendor that doesn't care much about quality. I've still got it, it works, but man, the difference between that printer and my Prusa Mini is HUGE. The Prusa Mini is $399, and worth every penny. I should have started with this one, saved myself a bunch of headaches.

One thing to factor into cost is that the printers cost $400 and you have only so many print hours before they just die on you. Regular maintenance cost is a factor as well. Still that might add a buck or so but wear and wear is no joke! Great design Greybeard!

100%. Part of why these things are expensive (and time consuming) to print. Less than solid, and the air space inside is going to make 'em float.
Back in my day we just tied rock to ‘em

I joke but seriously I have just been weighing them down and raising infill by 20% which isn’t recommended
