I woke up this morning with the lights still on... I was like what the heck? I proceeded to turn off the lights and went back to the bedroom to chat with my wife... in the middle of our conversation, I realized, I wonder what the temp of the tank was... I looked and it was 87 degrees.. YIKES!!!

not only my corals got blasted with lights for 14 hours, they also experienced the torching temp..

here's what I plan to do today... just gradually lower the temp to normal (78-80) and minimal (4 hours) photoperiod for the next 2-3 days... I hope this will help them on not getting shocked... I hope I don't lose any.. :(

anybody else had a similar experience?

Thanks in advance..

Oh man! It happened to me one day I did waterchange as my RO/DI resevior is constant 79..turn your heater off and that should come down atleast 5deg.. HTH and sorry to hear about what happened...

steve

I had a stuck heater on my frag tank.... I did not have a thermometer so I'm not sure how high the temp went..... I lost about half of what I had.... those that survived were the one's that were under a lot of extra flow as they all started peeling and tissue was melting ....I think if I had gotten more into high flow I could have saved them.... a few lost color but are recovering....Good luck

most didn't look happy but were open earlier and I'm really keeping a close eye on any that shows any sign of melting...

thanks guys..

temp is down to 85.6 after an hour... I think that's a good rate so I'm expecting to be down to normal by early afternoon..

my tank went up to 90 once. everything looked real upset i brought it down to 80 in about a hour with no ill effects.

That REALLY sucks Marvin :( I hope everything pulls through for you! Definately keep us updated! Are your fish ok?

Hopefully all will be well Marv.

How did the lights stay on? Do you have a controller?

Hope all is well Marvin. This happened to me once and I lost everything.

marvin controller or timer that went wrong

corals can take some abuse

i have a chiller on my tank that isnt hooked up to my controller just in case--to much invested not to

I think they can take it in small spikes in short time periods, but when it is long term heat waves, that is when it will really get the corals. I had issues last year with temps......Keep an eye on your zoas for pox after the temps come down. The temp fluctuations I had last year seemed to bring on the pox in a few frags......Good Luck Brother....

Marvin, I had the complete opposite happen to me this morning. I got home and my tank was 68.2 degrees. I preceeded to raise it back up to the normal 78-80 degree mark. I did this pretty fast so hopefully I wont have a problem from the drastic and rapid change in temp.

I wouldn't worry too much 87 isn't exactly unnaturally high for some reefs around the world. Also, the temps on reefs aren't nearly as stable as most people in this hobby seem to believe.

zoas can handle high temps no problem; my tank got into the 90's and while most soft corals perished the zoas were open the entire time

sps can also take high temps, but 86 is where stuff starts to get dicey, at that high a temp you need a lot of water movement to keep the water sufficiently oxygenated

i would be concerned that the extra light might bleach things, and that might not show up for a day or two.

i highly recommend an aq jr. to keep these things from happening in the future. did a timer break?

I think the timer messed up.... I dunno really coz it began last night when I got home... my photoperiod is from 2 pm to midnight... got home around 5:30 pm and the lights weren't on... I turned them on manually from the timer and woke up this morning around 8 am and the lights were on...

I'm not home right now so I'll take a look at them when I get home and update you guys... I left the house around noon and the tank was at 80 degrees...

thanks for all the input guys... I really need to consider looking more into techie stuff to lower the risk of any other mishaps that might come up.. too much time invested on finding the pieces I have so it'll be a shame to lose them from my carelessness.. :(

Would be a dang shame if those beautiful corlas of your didnt make it!!
best of luck..
At least it doesnt sound like it was overheated for very long

Updates! How is everything?

so far so good.. temp is holding between 78-80 throughout the day.. lights were only on for 6 hrs today.. everything looked good for the most part... some frags didn't look too happy but I'm glad I have doubles all over the place.. ;)
