I live in Vermont, some of our communities have old pipes, old houses, etc. My house was build in 1900...or maybe earlier. My modern plumbing is copper, but I still have a piece of lead pipe poking down from the bathroom which has been renovated. My community is known to have the best water in the state of Vermont, we don't add anything to it. It does have a couple of ppm of nitrates. I tried to squeeze a bit more water from an old DI cartridge, ppm was coming out at 2 ppm...... sure enough GHA started to grow back. Changed the filters out and the algae went away.

I've seen 20 year old galvanized pipe just as bad as that. Nasty stuff, and most people brush their teeth in their bathroom with it supplying their water.
