What have turned out to be your favourite fish additions to your nano tank? I thought about this question after posting about additional stock ideas when moving to a larger tank, but wanting to keep the nano sized fish.

Mine would have to ultimately be the tailspot blenny, though I have been fond of most of the livestock I've had at one time or another.

Just a small list and what I've come to find interesting about them over the past two years of nano tank life:
  • Pinkstreaked Wrasse (Wild): Very curious, cryptic, loves to cruise around picking at pods or other random things. Still shy, but at times will dart around and display to the rest of the tank.
  • Tailspot Blenny (Wild): Nosy, shy, but also doesn't take any guff! Always perching on something, picking at any random algae on the rocks or snails. Keeps the bossy clowns in their place, but leaves everyone else alone. Has a grumpy looking face that can only incite a bit of a laugh when looked at.
  • Bi-Colour Blenny (Wild): Much more timid than the tailspot, also larger. Tended to sit in it's rock hole most of the time unless feeding, a generally reclusive fish. It was removed in favour of the tailspot, but is in my larger tank exhibiting the same behavior.
  • Golden Assessor (ORA): Much subdued colouring than I had expected, a very dull gold rather than vibrant as some online pictures have noted. Haven't observed any swimming upside down behaviour yet, but a very active, visible fish at all times.
  • Neon Goby (ORA): A victim of my general ignorance when getting into the hobby (loss due to marine ich). It was an active, playful small goby that would always be perching against the glass. Funny enough it would usually hang around the sexy shrimp group than the other fish.
  • Ocellaris Clownfish (ORA): What can I say, they're clownfish. Very distinct behaviour change since becoming hosted by an anemone! Very territorial of the anemone, to the detriment of other tank members should they try to co-habit (RIP porcelain crabs). Something to keep in mind, and the male is still very aggressive of the others while in QT so the behaviour seems to be set now.
  • Rainford's & Hector's Goby (Wild): Tried twice with a small sifting goby, neither worked out. Very docile, but active fish while alive - slowly wasted away due to insufficient algae and sand-bed food sources.
  • Firefish (Wild): Two attempts at this fish as well, both resulted in jumping out of the lidded tank without notice (while doing water changes). I feel they are just too shy and quick to jump when disturbed in shallow tanks. Even with a lid, a turn of the back for a moment and I missed the jumping events, not finding the fish till it was crispy on the floor behind the tank days later.
I've been pretty reserved with stock, but looking to expand later this winter. If I could just find some darn greenbanded gobies in Canada!

Yellowhead or Pearly Jawfish are also pretty amazing and have a great personality ;)

Midas Blenny!!
Really miss the Midas I had, beautiful fish. Going to try for another, in my larger tank next time they're available locally. I think it must have gotten injured in QT by the tomini tang, stopped eating. Did so well through copper too, that's probably the most gutted I've been after a fish loss.

Personally love all of the smaller goby and blenny species but I never really see any of my gobies. Tailspot was an awesome fish. Coolest goby I've seen is one that I have now (first picture) and I'm also fond of my red ear barnacle blenny (2nd pic)

Yeah the first one I had ended up jumping through my screen too and drying out the first night. I decided to groan another one (much bigger in size) and have had no issues at all. It's very hardy!!

Awesome thread!!! I've had serious reservations about adding fish to my 14g nano. The actual display area of the nano is probably 17x12x13(entire tank is 20x12x13), and I hate seeing fish in tiny little glass boxes and end up outgrowing the box... Looking back I wish I got the 20g version.

Once you get a 20, you'll wish it was bigger. I don't think there's any stopping to the madness.

Faces on the blennies just crack me up.

I have a 75 for my larger fish. My 14g originally was to hold my 1" coral beauty because my female clown decided to try and kill it. Lost the coral beauty to velvet very shortly after I moved her. I'm leave the tank fallow until after mid October just to be safe. I've thought of a pair of candy basslets. Kinda expensive but they are so pretty. As for wanting larger and larger tanks... I'm planning a Reefer Peninsula build and my nano will get upgraded eventually, after the Reefer build is finished. I like having one big and one small tank. :)

Oh nice, those basslets look awesome! I'm sort of doing the same, eventually. 20G > 4' ~60G, 65G > 6' ~165G peninsula, shared sump.

Have to say Oculus clownfish are my favorite but I also love clown gobies the way they sit still at any angle is cool to me and I also love the look of flame Angels but have never owned one.

I can speak from my picos (6g) as love my clown goby as one pictured above, but he hides tons. I can see him under the rock with his buddy the candy pistol shrimp. But my other 6g has 3 Trimma gobies and they are great! Out and eat all time and soooo darn cute and small. Trimma rubromaculatus

I really want a nice shrimp goby pair for the tank with the Trimmas. Just have to find one that is out and not shy.

I thought the Randals I had with a candycane shrimp was so cool, neat, till they decided to live under my rocks against the rear of the aquarium, and I never saw them for weeks at a time. Have been hesitant to get another shrimp goby & pistol since.

Yep, I agree! The struggle is real! Lol

I wonder if barnacle blennies would conflict with a tailspot blenny? I know traditionally mixing blennies is a bad idea, but that seems to be in reference to the larger guys and not these little ones.

Blennies are awesome! Favorite fish we have ever had was a Red Sea mimic blenny. Rarely find them anymore and when you do they are around $150.
That being said 2nd favorite nano fish was the Geometric Pygmy Hawk. Not even a Hawk fish but is in the anthia family. Very cool little fish.

The smaller blennys will coexist... Well most of them
