Im curious.. how old are your aquariums ? I dont mean how old your reef or fowler tanks i mean how old is that glass or acrylic box.

My main tank is 135 gallons. Was build in sept of 1982.. Its nearly 40 years old at 37 years. Been running it for the last 3 years.. i bought it from the original owner 3 years ago for 100$ with the custom built angle iron ( steel stand) but later i replaced it with a wooden pine stand for 40$. Its a beautiful steel stand dont get me wrong but i needed a stand with doors

The gentleman was in his 70s.. and couldnt keep a fish tank anymore. He had 3 buyers shead of me but he sold it to me because i told him id reseal it and refurb the stand.

I kept my promise.. i resealed it (, of course) and i sanded the stand down and repainted it. I even kept the guy updated in texts with pictures on my progress. I knew he was attached to it and i wanted him to know it went to a good home.

I was born in 1984 so it’s amazing to think that a tank can still hold water that’s older than me. Do you have pics?

Yes i do. Let ne charge my old phone and get the pictures off it when i first got it and restored it and the stand.

But here is a pic of it running today. Sorry its been up for only 3 years and 2 1.2were fresh water... i just converted it to salt like 4 months ago.

So one pic is fresh one is salt. One thing to note is the age if the age the glass is 1.2 inch thick and no center braces... modern 125 and 135s all have braces and use 3.8 thick glass which is nearly 1.3 less thick

That’s a beautiful FW tank. Why did you break it down? Planted tanks were so much trouble for me. Although saltwater is much more work and science, I do prefer salt over fresh.

Honestly my Discus tank was better looking then my reef tank.. and costed me 1.3 of the money... but i bought a discus one day...qt it... and it never was sick... i put it in my main tank you see in the pic... then in 5 days i lost 90% of my discus... every discuscbut 3 in the picture died.... they all started breathing heavy... heavy slime coat.. and boom died like i injected them with ebola or something... the discus i bought never got sick...

So he was a carrier of some kinda plague... i waited 6 months... bougjt 400$ in discus.. lost sll of them to the same disease.

I was mind blown... i started salt water in a 55g hexagon... i had 4 discus left... and i started liking salt better.

So i moved the 4 discus to my 55g hexago. And went to salt in my 135..

Sorry for bad spelling.. im drunk as a skunk.. i jusy got back from a queen concert

So sad to hear. Queen is still playing!!?? I was a huge fan of them growing up.

I still habe the same concept of a fw tank i. My 55g... with my remaining discus.. but whatever disease they have they keep spreading to new discus... so im 100% screwed unless i cull my discis and start over.. and i cant kill my fish like that.

Lead singer died of aids years ago.. this was a band that played their songs.. they were from the UK and came to virginia in the usa.. i think they are touring all over the us. They were actually really good.. alot of the crowed was too young though.

I remember when Freddie Mercury died. So sad because he was such a great songwriter. I also liked his solo before he died.

My 180 reef ready is about 13 years old still going strong. 2 separate reefs divided by a cichlid tank have been in there for the entire time. Current system is almost 4 years old in it.

@ScottR

It's a good thing you too, still hold water..... or your body would be a pile of dust.

Just sayin :p

I have a chronic case of upgradeitis, so tanks don’t stay much more than 4-5 years. The lone exception was a World Class 180 that I bought in 1990 (reef ready before they were all the rage). I ran it continuously as both a planted tank and a reef until the end of 2008 before selling it off. I did subsequently see it for sale again in 2013 (seller representing it as a 5 year old tank :D). Lost track of it after that. Never a reseal (mostly a pointless exercise).

Here's an article that describes "Discus Plague". Apparently, this disease is caused by a form of the herpes virus, and it spreads very easily.

One of my tanks is an Odell, for those who remember, manufactured in 1989 and has held water ever since. It’s all tempered and weighs more than my custom 170.

Ive heard that name before but not familier with thkse tanks.

My tank is 1.2 thick glass eith no center braces. For a 125 -150 they all have braces and are 3.8 thick so nearly 1.3 less thick.. so my 135 weighs as much as a 180 im betting. Its scary when its filled up it has like 1.4 inch bow or more haha..
