While I'm still in the planning stages, I have an eel question. I plan on having a Zebra and/or a Snowflake Eel once my tank gets wet. My question is, what is the adult size of both these guys. Not overall length, but the adult size in regards to their girth. I ask because I plan to build an under the sand "cave" out of PVC. I'm not sure if I'd need 1", 2" or 3" PVC to be certain that there'd be enough room for the eel to move through the PVC comfortably. There will basically be a PVC "X" under the sand, with one of the legs of the "X" coming up the back wall hidden within the rock work. This will give the eel at least 4 entrances/exits to his "caves".

Thanks for your help!!

So, I"m not an expert on eels at all, but from what I've seen.... zebra eels have more girth than the snowflake. You could probably get away with the 1 inch pipe for the snowflake, but the zebra eel could possibly need 2inch or maybe bigger. Good luck! :)

The bigger the better I would think as they are pretty thick even when small.

^^^ if it's too big they might not take home in it because they won't feel safe

I started out with half inch PVC when I first got my snowflake when he was a baby, but I see myself remaking his home every 7 months to a bigger size now I'm at inch and a half

I've had him for about 2 years now about 2 feet long and it all depends on how much you feed him a week

I think you'll want to go a bit bigger in pvc if going the zebra route. Even the smaller 1s are much thicker than most of the other common reef eels.
