I would like to make a stock solution of Zinc as well as an Iodine supplement to add to my system. I had a Triton test done and found that it is low on iodine and zinc. I tried using the Triton supplements twice but cannot afford to continue dosing using their extremely high priced additives. I need to come up with an alternative. Does anyone have a recipe or calculator for making stock solutions of these? I was thinking that using a lugol's Iodine solution may much more affordable way to go although, I cannot find anything for Zinc.

While people use it, I’m not a fan of Lugols since the I2 in it is an unnatural form for seawater. Sodium or potassium iodide is a better bet, if you can get it.

Randy,

found this on Amazon as you mentioned.

The product description says:
Molecular Formula: ZnCl2
  • CAS: 7646-85-7
  • Molecular Weight: 136.315 g/mol
So if I would add 1gram to 1L Water, what would be the Zinc concentration in this solution?

As always, thanks a lot for the help on the chemical subjects!!!

I think I got it.
Mol weight 136.315 in a mass of solute of 1gram in a total solution volume of 1L equals a concentration of M=0.00734

1M is 136g/L or 136,000mg/L
0.00734 M is then 998,24mg/L or ppm!

Not quite. :D

zinc chloride is 48% zinc by weight (based on the molecular weights of zinc and chloride).

So 1 gram in 1 L is 480 mg/L zinc. :)

Did you end up getting this and dosing it? I need to raise my Zinc according to my Triton test and I also want to avoid paying so much for additives. $32 for 100ml is pretty steep! Would you mind linking the product you got for Zinc?

For a sanity check, what do you think of my reasoning here? I need to dose 9.54ml once, and then they recommend a daily dose of .94ml. I see a 100 gram bottle at Amazon for $10. If I mixed 1 gram of Zinc in 1 liter of water, I would end up with a 480mg zinc per liter strength solution. 1 ml of this would be adding .48 grams which would equal .48ml of zinc, and to get to my 9.54ml one time dose I would add 19.6ml of the solution, then 1.96ml daily?
