my local fish store sells these big colonies for 8 bucks. anyone knows what these zoas are? answers would be appreciated

You're unlikely to find a named zoa colony for $8 outside of generic bucket strains like fire and ice, creamsicles, blueberry field etc. That said, if you like them, name or no name, that shouldn't stop you from pulling the trigger on them. I've got plenty I bought as no-namers and won't hesitate to trade with buddies if they have something neat.

I will, however, caution you that something like that should be dipped and QTed. As it is I see sponge and perhaps some sort of macro... colonies like these have the high potential to bring in all types of critters. You'll also want to take your time adjusting it to your lights because wild zoa colonies vary greatly in their ability to adapt to aquarium conditions.
