I'm not sure what this is growing on my zoa, but I don't think it's zoa poxs. It's the stringy stuff coming off the zoas body. It seems to be causing the zoa to stay closed. Any help on an ID and treatment would be great.

I'm not exactly sure what's going on at the moment, but have you tried taking them out of the DT and using a brush on them yet? Zoanthids are actually quite durable. GL.

No I haven't tried that, but I have rubbed them with my finger and it does come off. I was planning to try a peroxide or Furan dip to try and kill what ever it is as I don't want it to keep coming back. I will try brushing them and see what happens.

Those look like hydroids. I haven't known them to grow on zoanthids like that. It could be my eyes playing tricks on me and that is just algae. How long have they been closed?

I do have hydroids, but they are a different variety. That's not to say what ever this is could be a type of hydroid. They have been closed for a few days to a few week. Not all the polyps close its usually one by one. Even some that have the fuzzy stuff still open. None have died thus far, but with enough time it seems inevitable.

I had a frag stay closed for 3 weeks and then recovered fine. It was sprouting babies the whole time. It was really odd.

If it has been a few days, I personally would give it a quick dip. Peroxide diluted in tank water would be my first shot.

That's the plan. I figure do a peroxide dips then a quick brush off. I do 10 parts SW to 1 part peroxide for 5 minutes. Does that sound right?

I would go vice versa... Manual labor first, (brush) then use the chemicals if needed. JMO. GL.

I decided to brush one and dip another. I will see how they turn out over the next few days. Thank you cloak and icecool2

Do post up the ending. So many try things and never bother posting results. Doesn't help the next person unless you come back. ;)

If none of those work I've had good luck with a chemiclean dip for zoas. No real formulation just a couple scoops to a cup of tank water.

Hmmm a chemiclean dip I may have to try that. Both zoa are doing good. The ones dipped in peroxide are still a little ticked but opening up. The peroxide seemed to get rid of the stuff on the zoa. The ones I manually cleaned looked the best. All polyps open on those.

So the zoa I scrubbed had this stuff grow back fairly fast, but the zoa I dipped didn't seem to have any new growth. I decided to dip all my zoa to try and rid my tank of this stuff. Still don't know what it is so shooting in the dark currently. If peroxide dip fails I will try furan after my zoa have a week or so to rest. Could it be a algea, fungus or as stated a type of hydroid?

Scrubbing only removes what you see (mostly), whereas a dip is chemically removing the pest.

After the dip all seemed well, but unfortunately the stuff is growing back on some. Should I try a furan dip next or stick to peroxide? I rather not do another peroxide dip as it seems pretty harsh. It's a major pain not knowing what this stuff is as I don't know what will kill it. Also what are some opinions on setting my QT back up to house them sepetate from the main tank for the time being?

It would appear it is irritating them as they don't open all the way. The ones affected stay closed or partially open and the ones without it are open fully. I have never had any issues with a peroxide dip, but I have never done continued dips and don't want to do more harm or cause unneeded stress.
