i always enjoy reading what type of lighting everyone uses for optimal growth etc. but i have an observation\question. i have a colony of what i think are bubblegum zoas, the original colony was maybe 20 polyps. now it is close to a couple hundred polyps and is growing under the rock shelf and not in direct lighting. is lighting intensities and the such over blown? or more than likely these particular zoas just don't need alot of light.
and while i have you all on the line...how does a single completely different zoa pop up in the middle of another colony? i have a single green zoa with silver speckles in it that has come up right dab in the middle of the pinks.

First, the zoa that popped up a diff color, do you have it somewhere else in your tank? Second, certain zoas grow better in lower light, others in high light, it depends on the zoa. For instance, I have a small colony of Darth Mauls, started with 5 now have about 15. However that was directly under my 250 halide. I however lost the coloration and they started to bleach. Ihave since moved them to a lower light area and they are looking better. Just my .02

my zoa grow crazy under led and 2 part every week. most people have issues with some as slow growers but I dont. I guess my conditions are high lighting and medium to strong current and they go nuts

I would be careful generalizing that all zoanthids prefer lighting X, etc. We are talking about a half dozen or so known species that are collected from a variety of conditions from reefs around the world. The most useful advice for growing zoanthids is, if it works- go with it. But figuring out what works is half the battle (and half the fun!).

Interesting you used Darth Mauls as an example Nemo....I just finally got my hands on a single polyp and have been wondering what works best for them, Now I will keep it in a little less intense area. In general though, I run LEDs and my zoas do well but as mentioned...each one is different with some liking high intensity and others low.
