Hey all!
How do we tell the difference between zoas and palys?
Ive always been told to go on size but there are some colonies sold as "palys" that are smaller.

Whats the deal?

I usually just go by size also and if the skirt has really thick or smaller hairs. Will try to post a few pics to show what I mean but I'm sure you get the idea already. Ask a hundred people and they'll tell you 95 different things so it doesn't really matter that much.

try feeding it...
Does it have a unnoticeable or very very slow feeding response? most likely a zoa.
Does it quickly take food and close around it almost instantly? most likely a pally.
Does it incorporate other items such as sand or substrate into its stalk? most likely a pally.

Honestly though short of getting it under a microscope to actually tell the difference in its genetic structures its almost impossible. The above inst concrete but its some good guide lines.

heres a short 5 mintue vid from Than at Tidal Gardens that sumps it up.

The real scientific solid line difference is... Have to cut one open and look at their guts ..their mesentaries(small intestines basically.) and how many chambers or septa they have. Only way to be sure.

Laymans/dont wanna kill it to figure it out... palys will absorb and help structure itself with the substrate it finds around it. generally are larger, generally are more aggressive towards foods, generally have longer tentacles. And Zoas dont absorb sand...and are "generally" the opposite in everything else. BUT these generallys are no guarantee.

Science wise...we are still at the idiot level with these not enough studies have been done and most that were done was in the 1800s. It's like we are trying to say a Wolf is a German shepherd, but maybe not a lab but what is a pug? and whats a fox? Define the difference to a layman.(skipping the obvious issue with domestication issue here lol) The classification system still needs a LOT of work.

Thanks for the video, Im trying to understand better with what I have and how things work.
I appreciate all the answers!

This is and older thread but i will see if I can get some more info.
So I have a shelf rock with what I thought were plain looking zoa's Now I think They are paly's? I now realize the two are so closely related it's not a big deal for me the average keeper.
So Can I place zoas & poly's on the same rock? don't want them fighting for room & ticking off everybody else with the nasty chemicals they release.
Will one crowd out the other?
Can I mix them?
I don't care if I have a zoa or paly rock as long as they get along & looks nice ! Thanks
