So I have some of my zoas/palys melt. This has happened after there has been growth or they have been in my tank and doing well for quite awhile. I also have others that continue to do very well. Is there something I am missing or is this just part of the hobby and having zoas/palys.

I am going through the same thing! These are some of the things to look for:

Consider moving them to another part of the tank with less/more flow/light to see if that helps.

Check alk. Mine dropped down to 7.5 which is low and when I raised it my zoas started perk up. Watch it and see how yours react. Just don't make any sudden changes.

Check for pests. Zoa-eating nudibranches are the same color as the zoa they are eating and their eggs attach to the polyps and look like small white spirals. You can dip in Coral Rx or lugol's. These dips will kill the adults but not the eggs, which have to be removed by hand. Just make sure you wear face protection and gloves if you do this. Zoas are toxic!

Check to see if crabs might be bothering them. If they get irritated they might close up.

Check all your water parameters to see if there have been any recent changes. For example, I changed my carbon and my tank started to look bad so I removed it and it helped. I'm not sure why.

Sometimes you never figure it out! And I'm sure others can chime in. Hope his helps!

Seagars, I am hoping you ahve read 100s of post with similar problem. Also, if you are serious about anyone providing real advise, you should provide details of your tank, inhabitants, water chemistry and some pictures.

Sam.
