He was joking while trying to make the point that zoas look great under blues but under whites all zoas look washed out like that. It's probably just the fact that you have the blues down at that moment. Also zoas tend to become more dull when kept in lower light which comes from lack of color being produced by zooxanthellae(sp?) through photsynthesis.
