Hey guys,
haven't seen this question before. Who first started collecting zoas for aquariums? Kind of curious how this got started.

or has a question like this been asked already? if so point me in the right direction!

Wow - zoas have been in the hobby for a long time, I wouldn't have any idea who first started collecting them. Be curious to see the answer on this one myself.

I could be wrong, but i believe they originated on an old old wooden ship, in the civil war era....

Would be interesting to find out this!

I have an old friend in the hobby who said back in the day, they were considered a pest! He told me they thought of them as an aiptasia like pest, and would get rid of them if they were growing on anything. I don't know if he is pulling my leg, but that is what he told me.

He's not kidding. I remember lots of times getting asked how to get rid of them. Guys hated them. Some people still do........FOOLS.

I remember that as well. They use to the like star polyps are now. Some people wanted them while most looked for ways to kill them.

Surely they were trying to keep some DDB's and not some nice colored zoas! BOO! (ddb=doo doo browns)

I am about to start killing some off. I have over 1000 of these Hitchhikers Nano Reef
They are spreading everywhere. One day there is one colony then two weeks there is another 20 across the tank. Now I have about 7 colonies of these things all over now. One colony being over 300 at least. They look amazing under the actinics, but I can really see how they are seen invasive. I am real close to shooting them with some kalk.

brooo. you should throw up the colonies for some cheap $$$ i'm sure there's a newbie reefer that would love some! or even send it to them if they pay the shipping?

Yeah, I guess I could do that. I have unique rock though and its going to be a real chore getting them off. I will give it a shot this weekend though.

Yep those RDEs are notorious spreaders - like ST said offer up some cheap colonies. Lots of new reefers will probably happily take them off your hands.

you'll be blessed man. i remember the first coral i got free when i was a newb. I was so stoked. it was like christmas in april for me. (trying to forget that christmas i got a recycled coach wallet (same wallet i got the year before)

hmmm... i'm dying to hear from older reefers who had tanks back in the day.

When I first started collecting @ 2000-2001 they were mostly browned out zoas and were called polyp rocks cause you buy them in rocks and not in frag plugs. 9 corals for $99 at Jeff's Exotic Fish in Gardena, I think.
Most were brown and the only cool ones were the yellow ones. Not until 2004 that I heard about the Purple People Eater, I don't remember who named it but I know it wasn't Tyree, and the Tubbs blue. That's when the PPE I think were going for $100 per polyp and the tubs blue I think I bought at $10 pp. :)

dang $100/pp for PPE's! thats pretty nuts!
