i am just wondering if there is a standard for placement of zoas/palys. do certain colors require higher or lower light?

I do not know of one thing in this hobby that is a sure thing. As with anything, what works for me may not work for the next guy.

Some Zoanthids require high light others low light. This is the same with flow, parameters, and other variables within the tank.

Is there a particular morph you are inquiring about? Maybe others can share there placement and variable. Keep in mind what i mentioned before, though it may work for others it will not necessarily work for you. At least it may give you a baseline to start with.

Great question reefpeeper. This too always makes me scratch my head. I've bought many Z&Ps where the original owner had them high in the tank and under MH lighting. Get them home and place them high in my tank under moderate wattage T5s and see they don't like it. The reverse scenario is also true. Not sure if it is lighting spectrum differences or what. Anyway, I now make it a standard practice to start everything on the sandbed or near the bottom and slowly move it up from there. If I see color fading or necks starting to stretch or even what I would describe as hyper extended (radius or horizontally) polyps then I know pretty quicky it's time to move them up some.

Anyway, my rambling was of no help to your question. I too will be looking for some unkown secret that may improve my success by getting them in the right spot right after acclimation. I doubt such a secret or method exist however. We'll see

In terms of lighting, the single most harmful thing you can do is move your zoas around too much. Once fully acclimated, most of my zoas look great under medium to high light.
