I've been thinking about the long-term growth of my montipora and other sps corals. The main concern is the montipora running amok and killing my acros.

If I were to place zoanthids / palys between them, would this prevent the montipora from growing past or would it over take the zoanthids, too?

I consider the zoas / palys less invasive, in my experience I've always been able to easily peel them from the rockwork.

Are we talking about a monticap, an encrusting monti or branching monties? IME, the answer to you question will vary depending on the type of monti we are looking at.

Definitely the encrusting type. Sunset, rainbow, appleberry, etc.

IME (Purple Haze and the Undata), the encrusting montis will out compete the zoas and palys. My purple haze has grown into about a 8" circle and has eliminated a number of zoa colonies that were on the same rock.

my fire and ices are slowly encroaching on my green mille, so I would have say thats not a good idea.

although it would be neat to see a zoanthid/paly covered SPS skeleton

+1. My encrusting montis have all grown over the top of neighboring zoanthids.
