Hey guys Ive got a couple of colonies of zoas that have been closed for a few weeks now.s are My water parameter Ph: 8.0, Ammonia: 0 ,Nitrite:0, Nitrate: 40 when it is usually 10 ppm. They are partially open but not fully, they are also seperating from the piece of rock in a few places . im working on lowering my nitrate back down. I believe they originally closed due to algae on them but theres no more on them and the stuff thats connecting the whole colony together looks like its shriveling up .Is there any dips i can use to encourage them to open. they have to be something homemade because I cannot get coral dips in hawaii, i also heard that Vitamin C tablets help them . Any help is appriciated

--Thanks

You can get iodine on any pharmacy. try one that says 10%. Dip them for 15 min. I would put 10 drops per gallon. If there's any algae try to use a baster or tweezers and blow or take off.

Do water changes to bring down your nitrates. Have you had any die off from the corals or any tank inhabitants that could be cause a spike in nutrients? Are you feeding too much?

I haven't had any die offs due to nutrients, but my biggest killer is ich.not feeding much accept once weekly, my plate coral.

Nutrient is main source to created phosphate and nitrate in reef tank. Nutrient could came from many source like feeding, water, salt mixed. Try to eliminate your source off nutrient to control nitrate. The best method to remove nitrate are water change and nitrate remover products.

Most of the fishes will adapt to high nitrate in reef tank with no issue but corals will upset and closed...melted.

I believe that they closed partially due to the nitrate but the main reason is algae on the zoas themselves , I believe its cyano. does anyone know how to remove it and keep it away?

If you are sure it's cyno then use Chemiclean to remove it, cyno will be gone within 2 days. Chemiclean is cheap and effective.
