Zoas but palytoxin...

I want zoas but my family is freaked out by palytoxin to my knowledge there are no zoas that do not have palytoxin... is there any zoas that dont have palytoxin? I doubt it but if anyone knows anything proven to not have palytoxin please tell me

There isn't really any threat from palytoxins. You would have to be really rough with them. Palytoxins become airborne, typically you will have issues when you are boiling live rock or teting an acid bath. That is why everyone will tell you to do that kind of stuff outside

Don't scrub the rock of zoas out of water if they need algae removed.

It’s a guessing game—there are no guarantees on which zoas and palys have palyotoxyn. If you work with them while they are under the water and you are wearing gloves, you’ll be OK. Do not, however, work with them under the water if you have open sores on your hands or arms. If you frag them while they are out of the water, wear gloves, mask, and goggles. They can aerosolize the toxin, which can be a real problem if you inhale it.

I handled a zoa/Paly rock barehanded under the water while having a cut on my thumb. I woke up in the middle of the night with my thumb swollen tight as a drum. It took several hours to go back to normal. Scared the daylights out of me.

In my opinion, get some LPS instead. Virtually anyone who gives you an answer has no idea one way or the other. People on reef forums down play it just because they’ve never had a severe exposure to it. What we know is both Zoas and Palys MAY contain palytoxin and you’re sensitivity to it increases over multiple exposures to it.

I have some LPS but I would love to try some zoas I have downplayed it to them and they just do not want zoas in my tank... I was just hoping someone knows some test or something where they proved certain varieties nontoxic.

I’ve cut 10s of thousands of zoas and never had an issue- other than getting squirted in the eye. While no one can say for certain the likelyhood of them causing an issue is minimal.

As pointed out people that have problems them to have been doing stuff like boiling rock.

GSP No. Have been fragging and gluing outside water without an issue.

It does not. However, they grow really fast and can overtake your tank if you don't do anything to gsp. I have one and it’s already growing like crazy.
