Zoas Staying Closed after Furan 2 Dip

Hey all,

I’m worried about my white walker zoas. I had a frag of them melt a few months ago, but got another, and the same thing seems to be happening to these.

They’re staying closed, and I thought it looked like zoa pox, so I did a furan 2 dip (one cup of water: one packet for 15 minutes) but 24 hours later they’re still closed up tightly. More tightly than even before the dip.

Other zoas are doing just fine.

Any tips? Thanks, all!

There’s the tiniest bit of peach fuzz hair algae on them. Do you guys think an H2O2 dip would be a good idea, or is that too much too fast? I just don’t want them to melt away again.

I personally would let them sit for a few days. what is your parameters at. Any fish that may be picking on them?

Thanks for the reply! No fish that would pick at it. Just some pretty benign fish (clowns, neon blue gobies, a target mandarin).

Parameter-wise, all I could think is that nutrients are a bit low (but all other zoas are fine, and last time they melted nutrients were a bit higher).

I'm big advocate of Furan-2 dipping. But, a few notes, it's most effective when you catch the zoa having issues early on. Once they're past a certain point its effectiveness drops precipitously. Secondly, if you're doing furan-2 dips you have to stay the course and go 4 days on and then a day or two off. A single dip won't accomplish much. I have been able to turn around frags that looked like they were shot early on in the dipping cycle.

After talking with some other zoa guys and see their results I tried Chemiclean because I had a few zoas that were struggling. This is the best 'hammer' I've seen yet. But you have to dose it system wide.

On white walkers specifically I've found that they do better in lower light. 110 par. Perhaps something to consider depending on where you have them. Additionally, they appear to be more sensitive to alk swings than many of the other strains I have.

Thank you so much. I’ll do another furan 2 dip now. Do you think my ratio is too strong? 1 cup to 1 packet?

It’s so weird that I seem to have the most trouble with whiter zoas (white walkers and Mary Janes). It could very well be a light issue. I’ll move them off the frag rack and onto the sand today.

I usually just 2-3 cups of water to 1 packet. I also have an airstone I drop in there to move the water around a little bit.

Mary Janes also gave me a lot of issues early until in the last year or so when I bought one that's been working out. I'd always err on the side of lower light to start. It's always easier to move a zoa than save a toasty one that's had too much light.
