I've always been a halide user but I went to a buddies place today and saw his tank lit by T5's and I was amazed by the colors. I've had problems getting my zoas to look good. I wonder how they would look under T5's.

My brother went from a good T-5 setup to a MH setup. He mostly has zoos and their response to the higher light was impressive. You will see a color differance and its to each persons preferance which looks better. I can say that coral perfer good water flow over high lighting. And if your coral have trouble now then new lighting isnt the cure. Lighting is just one way we control this little piece of mother earth. If you give tank specs like water source and tank size and age and all equipment u use and stock from CUC to coral to fish and the tanks feeding scedule and type of food used and amount of LR and LS.
But most important would be your water readings. What do you test for and there levels?

I actually have had some issues with some of my zoas under t-5. My tanks are smaller tanks right now and shallow because I have been thinking of moving for a while and thought it would be easier to move small tanks rather than a larger one. T-5's put out more par than halides esp allng the bottom and some of my zoos started to shrink up from too much light... The ones in the shaded areas of my tank did well. I had to reduce my photoperiod some. I was running my t-5 on the same schedule I ran my vho and halide combo and it was too much. T-5 will do a very good job on zoas just becarefull of the xtra par.

halides and t-5 are just fine for zoas.. His may have popped more under t-5 because he may be using more blue or actinic.

Some of my zoes under t-5: not the best picture because the sun was hitting the tank through a window and kind of overpowered the actinics so you can not see the pop from the actinics. You can see the sun om the pink ricordia

I've had the same experience as shred5, Dave, in my shallow grow out tanks. Zoa's that don't care for a lot of light begin to have trouble because of the intense par or uv of the T5's and I have to use less light, cut the photo period or shade part of the tank for these colonies to grow out. Others love the intense light and go nuts.

My guess is they did this a day or 2 after you increased the lights. Whene replaceing bulbs or increasing watts or upgradeing you want to start with 1 or 2 hours of main light time and bring up slowly over a few weeks if its a large increase. This will restrict algea blooms and stressed coral. Its like being in a room with an adverage amount of light for a long time then expected to just live under 2 or 3 or more times the light level.

I have a friend that is having no trouble with any growth in his tank under T5's. LPS, SPS, Zoa, etc... Very nice mixed reef lit by an ATI Power-Module

He runs the 36" 10x39w

I keep everything under T5HO's, even clams. The only problems Ive ever had was getting corals from somebody who used 150w metal halides and not thinking and putting them high in my tanks and then they bleached, moved them down, and they colored back up in time.

I keep my zoas and palys (except one paly colony) at the bottom of my 24" using a 6 bulb Tek mate...Since switching half of my tank for softies to the T-5's, my Z's AND P's have exploded...Even palys I thought were lost grew out of no where....I think T5's are better for them than my MH....

let's see some pics yo! :)

Ive used bopth set ups, i switched back to my HQIs, faster growth and much better color IMO. It all so depends on which kind of MH bulbs your using as well.
