Diatom bloom = conch all you can eat buffet. My two conches love a good diatom bloom. As long as it's not dinos pretending to be diatoms!
Great advice on the conch. I think they're really cool actually. Do you think my Halloween Hermit would play nice with it? I really hope it's not dinos. My tank is about 3 months old. It seems isolated to the top of the sand bed and disappears with the lights off.

I believe Halloween hermits are the risky ones with conches.

And if they are disappearing at night, I would be worried you might have ostreopsis dinos or possibly prorocentrum dinos. If that's the case, as ScottB says, welcome to the club no one wants to be in:

Lot of people here dealt with them before, though, so you're in good company! And let's hope for diatoms!

Well, I have some homework for in the morning. I kind of said it wrong. They don't necessarily disappear at night, but you cant see them as well under non white lights and when i have only ambient light in the room and no tank lights
I believe you may be correct and theyre probably dinos. I was hoping diatoms because my tank was so new. . Nothing is better than a problem that comes with a solution. I appreciate the information and everyone's willingness to help.

How old is the tank? What filtration/media are you using? Dry rock or live rock? And do you know nitrates and phosphates? Totally possibly you're just going through diatoms. Keep an eye out for stringy bubbles.

Good morning Smorgs!

Mmmm, scones with clotted arteries, erm, cream!

I just started following Kevin. I was wondering where you all hung out . I usually catch up eventually
Let us know when you do, I’m guessing it should be by the end of July :zany-face:.

Oh no... You accepted advice from Kev? Now we're in for some kinda trouble here. I bet he talked you into a Tailspot.
Hey Tim, I was hoping he settled in and felt comfortable before I started bribing him with free birdnest frags if he gets a tailspot blenny! Now you probably scared him away.

Omg ( that’s oh my god for you older reefer) that looks amazing, I can almost taste it.

Thank you! I hope to kind of arrange some of it better. I just want to get it acclimated. And I need a better phone filter for pics. Lol
Amazon has a great phone filter for taking pictures it is the one Luis and I use here's the link if you'd like to take a look at it.

If that is the first algae to show up I would put my money on diatoms. They feed on silicates and are gone on their own when there is nothing left to eat. Adding copepods can speed up the process. Ya, I wouldn’t add a conch with a Halloween crab but you could add a sand sifting goby and nassarius snails to keep the sand turned over.
