The noise you hear is the money that was wasted on a crappy overflow box

Anyone who is seeing this please do not do what dubs me and so many other people did and get the (loudest ghost ever I might add) ghost overflow.

It’s sad the other day I saw someone post that they just got the ghost overflow they have been out of the hobby for years and they are so excited to have a quiet overflow box..... it’s a shame and I truly felt bad for them

Just get @TaylorPilot to do it right the first time and be happy like me

If you go with Taylor you don’t have to be told that you don’t know how to set up an overflow box and that apex flow monitors are wrong and that u must be dumb and stop bashing his small business and blah blah blah you just install the overflow and it works silently
I didn’t even have to change my plumbing crazy that the same plumbing (chamfered Plumbing at that) I had in the original overflow box that I didn’t know what I was doing with because everything was my fault worked silently in Taylor’s box.
One good thing came out of this tho I met Taylor and my tank is quiet

Do it right the first time so u don’t have to go thru what me and Dubbs did

I know ur out there Mr Ghost Overflow I’m still waiting for that video to show me how your overflow can handle 3000 gph Silently.
What’s the matter you Still can’t find a flow monitor that can prove you right?

Eco Marine reckon the flow I want on a small inlet will never be silent. I get that but it has to be quieter. I will send them som picsand see what they can do. I need to see what room I have to get a wider box in as I have little room to the wall.

I need to move my powerheads I think they are making the issue worse but its not the only issue. if I remove the comb its quieter... not a lot but it is quiter

But it's related to your noise issue. The only way to tame the noise is to further raise the water level in the external box. This will run you into an emergency height issue where there may not be enough space between the top of the emergency and the rim of the box (though in all cases the top of the emergency must be below the equilibrium level of water in the display). With a typical 1" or even 1 1/2" emergency stand pipe, the mouth is too small to allow the kind of flow necessary if you are pushing to the limits of the overflow and wanting silence. The easiest way to solve this is to upsize the pipe significantly or just put in a baffle that isolates the emergency bulkhead (as long as the external box is not too narrow). I've done both. On my current unit I upsized the pipe to 3" so that if the emergency were required to handle 100% of the flow, it would not build up much above the rim of that larger pipe. This allows me to get much closer to the top rim of the box. I don't have a great picture, but here are a couple. Don't be confused by the 'extra' drains (5 in all) as I try to use gravity as much as possible to feed various things in my system. The three center drains would represent a more typical bean setup.

It's great that you were able to rig up a solution that worked for you.

A year ago when first installed, it was an either or option.

A year later, that still is the only option. They get pretty defensive when someone says their product had some flaws. I dont plan on doing what you did, but will try the gasket solution to shut in the salt creep.

@TaylorPilot built me a back box that works perfectly
He has done a couple peoples who have had the noose problem and everyone of us is now happy we have a silent tank

At this point, not interested in modifying setup much anymore. I think i did so much DIY at initial setup, too burned out. Just want a quick fix and to stare at my tank stoned/drunk/sober [emoji1787]

I’ll vouche for @TaylorPilot ‘s box. Not much work in terms of modifying. He sends you a new rear box. When you do a water change, swap them out. Easy as that!

Yea it was pretty easy hardest part was cutting the pvc to line up (and that’s only because I run it thru my wall so it had to be exact)
Took all of an hour and a half and now my tank is quiet

The hard part is making all these custom boxes. You guys just need to buy your first one from me, so I can just make standard boxes and you can save $200 and allot of grief...

Bringing something back from the dead. @TaylorPilot .. I'm thinking about drilling a 40 breeder and using the synergy shadow, but after reading all these horror stories, I'm curious as to what you can offer.

Where the tank would be...noise is absolutely not an option, and I see the design flaw of the Shadow. I also don't want to drill the tank, spend $200 or whatever it is, only to find out, it's loud.

I just wanted to throw a shout out to EMS. I too had a lot of noise. As soon as I put in the new overflow....silence!!! Quality is superb. Thanks for the help.

Mine had salt creep everywhere, even creeping down the plumbing. Had to seal up the lid with a small gasket. Like I said, terrible engineering.

Can you tell me what gasket material you used?

I used silicone lubricant. It's the same thing as oring lubricant. Dow 111.
