2 year old Vortech MP60 with defective dry side

I'm not usually one to complain but today EcoTech really got my dander up. Two years ago I purchased 4 MP60s, 2 MP40, 4 Gen3PROs to set up my 450 gallon. One of the MP60s started giving me trouble recently so I went through the troubleshooting I could do, then worked through it with tech support. They recommended sending the pump in. I did and received a call back saying my dry side was bad and it would cost approx $250 to repair. Now i get that things wear and need repair but seriously i spent $700 ea on these pumps, I'd expect them to last more than 2 years.

Planning on switching out all my EcoTech equipment. Anyone have any suggestions on what would be a good replacement for a 8' X 3' tank?

Did they say what was wrong with it? I’ve a bunch of MP60s and have had no issues with them but sometimes you do get a lemon. Seems like they’re giving you a break on a new dryside though. Selling of all that stuff in a pique isn’t likely to end you up with better gear.

bearings are bad. And ill respectfully disagree that they are giving me a deal. I spent top dollar only two years ago with expectation that i was buy quality. I expect more than two years of life when spending top dollar.

Your right, I may not end up with better gear, but based on this track record I can buy much cheaper equipment, get a longer life out of it and come out money ahead. Its the value proposition that bothers me.

I'm gonna have to complain about EcoTech for a brief moment as well. The wet side on my MP40wQD is now extremely noisy and I've already had to get a replacement dry side from them. I've had the dang thing less than a month.

Luckily my first MP-40 is still going strong, I bought it when they first came out.
My second MP-40 is a QD and it is only about a year old. It's so quiet that I am considering replacing the old one with a QD. I honestly think the OP just got a lemon.

eh I mean, yeah it isn't great but you are going to lose big money selling all your ecotech stuff used and buying other stuff. typically they have a great track record with service. Did the dry side get wet? or are they really just saying $250 for bearings.

$250 doesnt sound like new bearings. it sounds like an all new dry side so I'd ask what exactly is wrong.

I didn’t say deal, rather break - only because I’ve always been told by ETM that they don’t repair drysides and a new one for the 60 is $380. Perhaps they’ve changed policy. Regardless, unless water got inside, I agree that two years is pretty poor. Did you try to ‘escalate’ with them. I had that work one time.

Look into tunze if your bent on selling your ecotech equipment. Might be able to swap and get cash from someone.

They pulled same garbage on me and told me my 11 mo old MP40QD was fried and offered a new replacement at $350 which is near what I paid for a new one. So much for Warranty.
Hence , I got rid of EVERYTHING EcoTech I owned which was pretty much Everything !!

Some credit cards double the manufacturer warranty, and will pay the cost of repair. I’ve done that with apple products before using an Amex.

When you bought the pump, you should read the warranty. 1 year; no? They did nothing wrong, and were generous to offer a discount on the part.

These days I am leaning toward Sicce or Tunze pumps to get 5 year warranties.

I have had good experiences with Ecotech customer service. They sent a replacement fan for a Radion that was a few months out of warranty, as well as replaced a MP60 wet side that was rusting. They wouldn’t replace a ReefLink that had rust on a port, which I thought was fair enough.

Two 4' t5 x 8 bulbs.
Four SOW 20 jebao. I have a big tank too I get a 2" standing wave in mine. or 4 stream 3 Tunze.
Just saying.

I've replaced bearing in MP10's and MP40's....with bearings costing under $20. Only takes a couple simple tools....give it a shot yourself. Looks like Ecotech isn't going to help unless you slap down the cash.

I figure if i purchase Jebao 60s at approx $120 ea even if they only last 1 year i'm still way money ahead. Even if they don't work as well it is still a significant cost savings.

If anyone of us bought a kitchen appliance for $700 we'd be ticked if it crapped out in two years.

Have you bought a dish washer lately? I gave up on having one. Sorry about the MP60, I would spend the money and get it fixed. You can always sell it after that

My issues with an MP40 drove me to Tunze Streams. 5 year warranty. I love the MP’s, but for their cost, they should have a warrant y comparable to the Tunze’s.

OP, consider Tunze Streams, but honestly I’d repair it and keep running them. They’re the best, but flaky and not as reliable as I think they should/could be. But if had the $, I’d have 2 MP60’s lol!
