2014 nano in 90?

Oh man, I was looking forward to this. I just finished building my pico. I don't know if I can wait a month and a half, this is my only tank.

The tank I was going to use for this is actually a .6 gallon vase. I have one set up with no flow, but I have built an overflow and sump for a second one, which is the one I just finished. Would it be considered cheating if everything gets transferred over once the competition starts? It is kind of like transferring frags, but five or six frags fills the entire tank. Since this is my only tank I am limited on options.

could someone briefly explain the contest? I'm guessing that you put together a nano for $90 or less?

I would just prorate the shipping. If the fish cost $50, the frag $20 and the shipping $35, then allocate 20/70 of $35 ($10) to the frag shipping. (I assume that would be preferable to the alternative -- pretend you didn't buy the fish since it doesn't count and allocate all the shipping to the frag.) Pro-rating would also work if you ordered multiple pieces with some intended for other than the contest tank.

My suggestion is rooted in last year seeing several purchases of <$10 frags (may have been the 50% sponsor amount) with visible, but uncounted $35 shipping charges and thinking more was being spent on shipping than corals. My wife would divorce me if I budgeted that way. (though in the long run I might end up with more money for frags, lol, maybe around nano in 90 2025.)

I have a second suggestion too... There are many entries that are overcome by events and good intentions where life got in the way. I was nearly a victim last year after my kid knocked the tank off the table and cracked it, and was grateful for a rule exception to allow me to start again with a different tank. Sometimes I learn more from these "failures" (hesitant to use that word) and false starts than the successful tanks. Working in the space science field, I see many "failed" experiments yielding results on how to build the next iteration better.

Nevertheless, I wondered if it would be possible for the mods / judges to move inactive or otherwise disqualified threads to a sub folder so that only those still in the competition appeared in the main thread listing. The usual disqualifier is not meeting the rules for updates with pictures per month. Heck, I will volunteer to PM the judges with suggested moves or entries that might need a reminder if that helps manage their workload. Some cases are very straightforward, like when a contestant voluntarily withdraws. Last year I ended up making a list of all the entries for myself so I could see who I was still competing against. (You couldn't always go by most recent post because there were a lot of threads bumped by supportive "looking good" type posts.) Another possibility besides a sub folder would just be a sticky with a list of entries. I did find the exercise of making the list useful in seeing popular tank sizes.

Don't get me wrong; I am not looking to disparage anyone's entry but it *is* a competition, rules are rules (subject to waiver by the organizers to help keep things fun), and I think it might keep it a little easier to follow.

Did anyone else keep up with the narrowing field of contestants, or am I the only one?

Thanks for listening.

If you start counting shipping as part of the cost, do you charge gas for driving to the fish store too?
Some people don't have a store within 4 hrs drive and only have online purchases as an option. Some will drive 100+ miles for a frag while others are within walking distance of killer salt water only stores.
Who gets penalized how much for living where they do? How do you make that fair for everyone?
What about people that have awesome clubs and lots of frag swapping where corals that are prohibitively expensive in other areas are completely flooded in the local market and you can barely give them away?

I am fortunate to have a good local club, and another an extra 30 minutes in a different direction with several stores in reasonable difference that offer really nice $5, $10, $15, and $20 frags along with larger colonies.

Just kind of playing devil's advocate. I think the fair market value is a fair way to even things out.

Yes. Especially considering one of the prize categories is "most ecologically sensitive." I'd say if you can include stops at a store with other trips, you could get away with not counting your gas for the full trip (for example, I have a couple of buying opportunities a few miles off my 40-mile commute route -- I'd just count that few miles as long as I stopped there on the way to/from work). But, if you're driving all over town, 30 minutes in different directions, just for the purpose of frag shopping, yea, you should probably include that or at least a reasonable estimate. I might be in favor of giving you a pass if you're making your own biodiesel from waste vegetable oil or driving a Tesla Model S.

Stores will have incorporated shipping costs into their prices.

I only proposed tracking it, not subtracting it from the budget. So, I don't think it penalizes anyone. With the possible exception of minors living at home, people are generally free to move to another place if they think it would give them an advantage in reefing contests.

How do you make that fair for everyone?

Life's not fair.

Do Photo of the Month contests try to normalize entries to account for those that can only afford their smartphone camera vs. those that have a multi-thousand dollar setups with DSLRs, macro lenses, Photoshop, etc.? I think the answer is "no" but that it is nice and educational when photographers describe their equipment and methods. If someone can learn of vendors whose total purchase prices including shipping are favorable, then that's a point in favor of disclosing those costs.

What would you propose?

That's great! Nothing is stopping others from forming a good local club. You should encourage your local stores to become sponsors so you can discount your purchases 50% for budget purposes. I know Rev is very supportive of local clubs, so with that in mind, I'd say you could exclude the gas of traveling to/from local club events / swaps / members homes too. It's along the same lines of encouraging purchases from sponsors by offering the 50% discount for budget purposes.

I appreciate the response and discussion. I agree that fair market value is a good way to even things out for frags received from club members, fragged from one's own tank, etc.

If any of my responses offend, re-read them with a smiley at the end and see if you're still offended. This contest is meant to be fun, after all.

Your over complicating it and frankly, making it more about the money spent...the only limit on money spent is corals, other than that it's irrelevant.

Im going to spend the whole time either dividing up how much in shipping if I order a big order for my other tank and put a couole small things in for this tank, I have to divide the shipping or figure out mileage if im near a fish store doing other errands, how much of that was used for gas from the rest of the trip? If it doesn't go against anyone, then why bother with it?

If it did go against people, you'll have a heck of a time proving it..I.e., I got my frags by someone stopping by my hous and dropping them off...good luck proving that was the case or not.

You say it's meant to be fun, I don't think you offended anyone, but suggesting we need to start calculating gas and/or shipping costs just takes all the fun out of it....

Are you the person who either doesn't go to most movies because they are fake or goes, but comments the whole time how fake they are? ;-) ;-)

Depending on the timing, I might be able to get in on this. I should be moving around the end of July. If it is after August for the start date, I'll be in!

No, lol, I don't go to many movies because it irritates the snot out of me when people refuse to stop using their phones during the movie. I do do things like compute time to destination and fuel consumption in my head while driving.

I am fine with whatever rules are out there. I just thought it would be interesting to see "true cost of building" similar to how the car sites show true cost of ownership. Seeing contestants showing how they've spent $16 on coral when we can clearly see that is $16 + $70 shipping is what motivated the suggestion. I was only considering online orders. It was others that brought up other cases of making things complicated.

Anyway, what do folks think about my other suggestion of gently identifying entries that are out of the running while the contest progresses?

"Stores will have incorporated shipping costs into their prices."

This is untrue as the lfs in SoCal are cheaper in store vs online. For instance I can go to AquaSD and get a much better deal in store than I would if I order online.

Look at the stickied threads for the previous two years. Everything is stated in the first post for both threads.

i am gonna join this one hehe,so what is the rules?i already put some dead rock and a dead coral and a macro algae,is that okey?if thats okey i will wait to july and cycling more and put my coral july..

and does 60cmx40cmx30cm is count nano?

Look at previous years posts, that will tell you the rules.

60 cm x 40 cm x 30 cm = 72000 cm3 = 19 gallons, so yes that counts as nano.

The macroalgae can probably not be allowed until July 1st.

The bigger problem is that last year the contest was only open to residents of the US and Canada. I hope even if you can't enter the contest that you will show us your tank in the Nano Reefs forum.
