2014 nano in 90?

60 cm x 40 cm x 30 cm = 72000 cm3 = 19 gallons, so yes that counts as nano.

The macroalgae can probably not be allowed until July 1st.

The bigger problem is that last year the contest was only open to residents of the US and Canada. I hope even if you can't enter the contest that you will show us your tank in the Nano Reefs forum.

okey thank you, i will show my nano here,i already put macro alga anyway so i already been disqualified anyway hehehehe

Ummm grand prize hint.... :D

Yes you can!

Cool! Those dates might let someone set up their tank at a school.

I would like to propose a rule change. I think shipping cost should be accounted for in some way. If someone orders a $5 frag on eBay but it costs $35 in shipping, then it's really a $40 frag, though in previous years you'd only have to count it as $5 off your budget. If you chose to order another frag that was $40 with free shipping, you'd have to include the entire $40 in your budget. If you reach a vendor's free shipping limit by spending a lot, then great! If you have to go to your LFS for livestock, an estimate of the round trip fuel / public transit costs would be fair enough. And if you are able to grow out frags from another tank you own, great -- that's definitely environmentally conscious.

The idea is to help viewers have an accurate picture of what it would take to stock a tank. It would also help us learn which vendors have the best shipping rates. I would be fine with shipping costs being tracked separate from the livestock budget if y'all are happy with the budget amounts. In other words, they wouldn't have to count against the contestant, except perhaps when being judged in the frugal/budget category.

Anyway, I hope you can find a way to include shipping costs in the rules that doesn't make it overly complicated. What do you think?

So the reason why this contest is cool because we have many sponsors here that put up fantastic prizes and by using R2R sponsors for buying coral, you get 50% discount towards your budget. So if you buy a $10 frag you only count is at $5 frag. Last year the guy that won spent almost his entire budget with R2R sponsors and in essence doubled his budget. When it comes down to it sponsors are what make this contest happen. This contest is already difficult enough with required post, determining how much frags are worth coming from ones system, and so on. To have to deduct for shipping or gas spent traveling would leave us with bare tanks.

I'm new here. Is this open to anyone , or do you need a minimum post count ?

Thanks

Can't wait for the contest!! :)

I'm still reading up on the rules for the past years , but what are the rules for buying coral from local reefers ? If the prices are below what is considered fair market value, are we able to use the actual purchase price, and how would we prove such ?

I believe far market value will have to be applied. Wait for mike and terry to chime in.

Fair enough

However , if a receipt was available would we still be forced to use fair market value ? For example ; If I were to buy a frag pack from a local reefer, and he/she gave me a group discount for buying multiple frags from them, and I had say a paypal receipt with a note as to what the purchase was for, would that not be the same as showing a store receipt ?

I'm not trying to be argumentative , just curious.

Thanks

See I agree the local shops buy me do auctions on Facebook all the time so stuff goes for really cheap

In case anyone missed it, the 2014 contest rules are posted here.

Fair market value would have to be applied for sales/trades with local reefers. Sorry.

We have DATES!

The 2014 Nano in 90 contest dates are July 1st thru October 1st!

As in previous contests, you may start your builds and cycle your tanks ahead of time. A cleanup crew is allowed, as well as macro algae in sump for filtration - Otherwise, no livestock before the start of the contest. Size limits are the same as last year.

We will post the official contest rules and information once we have all of the details worked out - probably some time next week.

So STAY TUNED...
