I also had MP40 and don't care much for them neither. They also required frequent cleaning and the Wet Side doesn't last as long (especially for what they cost)
The Maxspect provides one of the best flow and control of all the gyres I have tried.
As far as cleaning goes, I usually just clean the motor section of the pump and doesn't take too long (but still a pia nevertheless)

Yes, the old design had interference fit on the caps and those allow the Propeller to move around as they worn out.
