I may be relocating from a house to an urban setting where there are mostly high rise condos. Does anyone here have or tried to have a large tank in such a building? I'm sure it depends somewhat on the building management but what have peoples experiences been generally? This would be South Florida.

Find the building plans. How high up? Personally I wouldn’t risk it but that’s just me. Plus beings fellow south Floridian the power outages suck and it would be hard to keep a 300g tank flourishing without a generator

Agree with checking with your building management. Also engineer/architect that designed to verify floor loading and your insurance company. Management will likely need you to carry some sort of insurance on something that large.

Dont they all have concrete floors?
I have not chosen a specific building as the move is not definite at this point, not sure on construction materials :-(

Better to ask for forgiveness than permission?
hehe maybe I'll just have to settle for a 120-150 and still potentially ask for forgiveness.

Reply from Canada. Friend did this. High rise condo. 100g. Needed permit from homeowners association and extra insurance ( in case of saltwater rain downstairs). Our concrete floors are usually rated to 80ib/soft. Wooden construction homes have more! When I put in a 160g freshwater in a commercial, they strengthened the concrete floor. Only 1 position I am allowed for the tank to be.

Forgiveness? When your tank leaks, or ato goes haywire, we are talking sued, By the owners, by the association, a lean on your property. And if you don't pay, your homeless. They well confiscate your condo.

It's in all bylaws of Condominiums. If you don't pay, we take your place, and sell it. So you can listen to some of these people or not. Good luck.

Highrise buildings are generally very well built. I know of 2 friends locally that have very large tanks on the +30th floor. Extra insurance may not be a bad idea though.
