4 x Wrasse - Which ones to get?

So, here's a simple one for the experts- and a difficult one for the rest of us!

After hours of research, looking through wrasse compatibility charts, forum threads etc. I have to ask my fellow reefers for help!

We're taking delivery of our new Cade 1200 aquarium on Monday- and I am trying to finalise the fish stock list as best as I can.

We have settled on a number of four wrasses- we like their nature and the way they behave in the tank! What we can not agree on is which four to get.


What would you do? Colourful and good-natured preferred!

I have a rohmboid wrasse, pintail fairy wrasse, 6 line wrasse, yellow coris and blue streak cleaner in my tank with no issues.

Pick a few that will eliminate any pests in your tank like 6 line and yellow coris.

That's a very hard question. Personally I make a list of my top 15 or so, and then would buy 4 of those as I come across healthy individuals. Look at the various fairies, flashers, smaller Halichoeres, tamarins, pencils, and leopards, as all make decent choices for a reef tank with sand (some need a well established sand bed so make sure to do your research on individual fish).

My 75 gallon includes (so far):
1 Timor Wrasse
1 Radiant Wrasse
1 Pintail Fairy Wrasse
1 Golden Rhomboid Fairy Wrasse
1 Hooded Fairy Wrasse

My 47 gallon includes (so far):
1 Brunneus Fairy Wrasse
1 Royal Flasher Wrasse

Not as such! We all like a bargain but we rarely get one..

Nah, looking for four wrasses who will be compatible and hopefully keep well together in the tank

Most of the reef safe species do pretty well over all mixed with one another. Follow the fairy wrasse compatability chart on this website, avoid the larger Halichoeres, and anything from the genus Pseudocheilinus. Also do not keep more than 1 specimen of the same species.

Really just seems to base off size that I find. The 2 biggest ones kind of determine who the tank boss will be. I have little to no aggression at all in the tank. Just a very infrequent chase away now and then sometimes at feeding but few and far between.

I will be stocking a 4 x 2 x 2' tank and obviously would like to avoid putting in fish who do not get along!

I can give you several combinations but it depends what you want? Do you want to go all out with price or keep it chill?

As with most of us, I do not have unlimited funds available- however, is it the right fish then the price is irrelevant right?

I am looking for pest control first and foremost, but colourful and peaceful individuals are a close second..

I do not mind species that buries them selves over night, the tank has a decent sand bed so plenty habitat for that.

I do not mind paying $75-$100 for individual fish as long as I am satisfied I get what I want and need!

Definitely look at the radiant, yellow coris, and leopards then! All are good options for your tank! A fairy or flasher still would not be out of place either.

Cracking looking fishies you suggest there- I will defiantly have a look at those and take it to my LFS to get some healthy specimens in for me!

I’ve tried to keep them as different wrasses and obviously you can mix and mash the combinations within eachother (None of the wrasses above should fight). Avoid the Pseudocheilinus genus as these will become aggressive - Mystery’s are of this genus - and should not be kept with other wrasses.

Yellow coris is my favorite. Peaceful pest control.
