425 gallon reef tank build

I contacted a moving company last night due to also having to move a safe down stairs and they had said they won’t due the tank. I just put emphasis in that it is glass and fragile they said that their insurance would cover it if broken.
The tank supposedly weight 750 pounds

Remember this- even if they will move it most companies only insure for 25c on the dollar. So they drop it you’re SOL. So make sure and double check that.

I moved mine and it weighed over 1k lbs in the House with 6 friends and some furniture dollies. You can rent straps and suction cups from most rental places.

The moving company I spoke with allows you to buy insurance for a couple hundred dollars that will cover any damage to the item
That or I’m gonna buy a hydraulic cart that will like the tank up to 39 inches to slide onto the stand

Good call, just wanted to make sure you overestimate your bases. I was going to have a company move mine for me from my barn and into the house about 200’ away. They wanted 800$ and their insurance wouldn’t cover replacement.

If I was closer I’d bring the gang from the gym over there and help ya out in exchange for some beer and... Mexican food sounds good right now. Ha!

The Siphon Stoppers, as installed in my Planet Aquariums tank... so it's possible that they were mounted a bit high, who knows. Anyway, they caused micro bubbles, as the jets of water coming down the vent guides into the tank carried surface air with them. In a freshwater tank? Fine. In a salt tank? You're just asking for salt creep to cover everything in the vicinity.

CA recommended I turn the returns to an angle, to get them below surface. In my tank, I'd have had them at over 30 degrees, and it looked bad... no thanks.

I ended up cutting the guides off and closing up the vents with silicone, and drilling a new vent just below water level. Presto, no more bubbles. Works fine, I'm still using them.

Honestly, if I had to do it again, I'd just assemble my own returns from PVC and Loc-Line. I think I could come up with something a bit more compact that would work just as well.

I do always try and mention, when complaining about Siphon Stoppers, that the two H2Overflows I bought, from the same company, I am VERY happy with. Clean, quiet, easy to service, carry a ton of water, great surface skimming capabilities, compact... I really like them. I did not get their external overflow box... my implementation required something a bit different, so I have no opinion on that one, or their sumps. Love the idea of a modular, extendable sump system, and love the idea of injection molded polyethylene as a sump, but I have to admit... they don't look very good when compared to something from Trigger, or any of the other acrylic sump makers. Me? I'm using a converted 55g tank as a sump, so I guess I shouldn't be talking about what looks good :)

Hey Stephen,
Thanks to you and discovering Crystal Reef Aqua I was so impressed by it that I ordered one for my build too! I'm interested to see how you plumb it. I got the stealth series not the triton b/c I don't run Triton. Naturally before I ordered it I researched some other companies and was wondering why you didn't choose or if you considered Bashsea? I liked their COVERS and wished my CRA came with some to reduce evap but I don't have covers right now and live with it just fine so i figured it was no difference.

You will love it!!! I have the 48 inch model... maybe you can ask if they can make you covers? I didn't for mine but they are really great to deal with. Great customer service!

I had actually heard really bad reviews about bashea, and I really liked the price of the crystal reef ones for what you get.

Stephen would you mind snapping some pics of the 48” model? I’m thinking of getting another one for my Frag system and it would need one smaller than my 60 that I ordered!

Thanks

Have you used the octo return pumps before? Debating what I should pick up for my 180. I've read they are very reliable.

I have never used their pumps before but I have always used a reef octopus skimmer!

Does anyone have any pics of a actual crystal reef sump in action? I'm interested in one for my new build as well.
Thanks for your interest! We will be getting some footage very soon. Follow our pages to stay up to date with the latest content. Check out this overview video I made the other day-
