48" Drop-Off Peninsula Project

I have been wanting a peninsula tank for quite some time and always thought I would have to move house to accommodate one correctly, but found a way round the whole house move thing by knocking down a wall instead :D

I have been working on this project for the past 3 weeks and decided to start a thread to track the progress and share my journey with the reefing community.

My design is to fit into a specific space so a tank 48" in length 24" deep (at the deep end) and 20" wide was the maximum I could go without it being too intrusive into our living space. The deep end is 20"x20"x24" with a 6" step up to the shallow 28"x20"x18" section. I have calculated the volume of the display tank at around 80 gallons and will probably end up with roughly 13 gallons in the sump.

In terms of aquascape, I am thinking of having two main sections, one just higher than the step at the front, but moulded around the step and then another large section raising up toward the weir and back of the tank. I intend on having smaller isolated rocks dotted around.

I expect to have the tank delivered at the beginning of January based on the lead time required of 12 weeks, but there is still plenty I will be working on in the interim period, with either equipment, sump, aquascaping and starting the cycle process off with the rock in a Brute bin.

Hope fellow reefers find this little build interesting and thanks in advance for taking the time to look and comment.

Which aquarium manufacture did you use, and would you recommend them? I’ve been looking at either Fit Filtration or Aquariums 4 life.

That is a very neat set up.
The scape is good, but i would change the pile of rocks against the overflow. Although, it can still look great once corals start filling the space.
I would love to hear more about the sump set up.

I'm just still working on all that at the moment, but can summarise.
A Theiling Compacr Rollermat, 2 media cups, for GFO or other stuff as and when needed.
A Reef Octopus SS150, with CO2 scrubber.
Next chamber will be some Bio Spheres, followed by a Kessil H80 Fuge light and TMC 5000 DC return pump.
I had a D-D titanium heater with control unit. Seneye and a Kamoer ATO.

I am finished for today now. Most things are done and it's all running, so just thought I would post a few pics showing from different angles.
Water is still settling down from a clarity perspective and the new skimmer is generating the usual micro bubbles to a slight degree, but I am pleased.

My replacement Gyre controller arrived today, so both pumps up and running.
I have it running the Luna Tidal preset mode at the moment and if anyone else has experience of this mode and wants to offer their opinions/findings/experience I would appreciate it.
Also recorded to PAR readings the other day and have documented as a guide, mainly for my reference below.

A month in and all is well. I am struggling with my phosphate and nitrate levels at the moment, even without running the refugium, so have bought a bottle of each to dose up to my desired level.

I have also switched the Luna Tidal Cycle preset over to a manual schedule, as I felt like it wasn't delivering enough flow. I will continue to tweak the Gyre setup as the weeks go by.

Here's a short clip of the fish...

I want to have a mixed coral reef and will transfer some or most of the coral from my old tank plus new ones.

5 weeks now and the aquascape is starting to colour up.
I have moved an acan colony into the lower/deepest part of the tank yesterday, which seems okay so far.
Still working on balancing things out and am going to have to dose some nitrophos.

It has been just over 3 months now and things are all well.
I have some coraline growth and have propagated some SPS from my Red Sea Reefer.
A red and a blue/green plating monti, some setosa, forest fire and green digitata, some lime berry hysterix and a blue stylo. Also doing well is my strawberry squash acan colony, the balsto, goniastea and hammer.
Today I added a watchman goby, as I feel there should be enough fauna in the sand bed now to sustain him.
