Aggressive. Get a melenarus

+1 Male mel wrasse was one of the nicest fish I ever owned. I never saw him start anything, but if another fish messed him that boy unleashed a butt whooping that was a sight to behold. Never did any lasting damage though. The only problem was he started picking at my snails.

Every tank I have from here in will have one. Melenarus is the most chill and useful fish I think I have ever owned. I never knew.

I called vivid aquariums and was ordering fish, asked for a six line and the dude kind of grunted. So I asked if it was a bad pick. He asked my why I wanted it at which case I answered "pest control". He said "get a melenarus.... Does the same work but better and won't be a prick to your other fish". So I did.... It arrived and 2 weeks after acclimating he came out. Dude he went straight to work.

I used to pull bristle worms out of my sand and release them half way up the water column. He would snag it before it hit the sand. Hands down awesome fish and I for one fell in love

Thanks all! melanurus wrasse it is! Just googled it and they look great also!!

I have a small Six Line in a 20 gal. long, I have five other fish with him and he pays little attenion to them.

Mine is a perfect citizen with my Banggai Cardinal, Royal Gramma, Bi-Colored Blenny and Yellow Watchman Goby. He was the last fish added.
I did notice his behavior at the LFS. Showed no aggression and was the smaller of the two. Not sure if that makes a difference but like you I too was hesitant. It's how I chose though.

You guys have got to Google this. I am telling you, I have known no less than 50 six line owners. Last night I spoke to 8 of them who used to tell me they had no issues, not a single one of them still had it. All of them said something similar to....he turned into a turd.....but in less PG terms. For those who are happy with yours....great. Post back in 6 months or a year and tell me then. Some of them take time to turn, but most of them, when they do turn, will beat anything you add to the tank after them.

The smaller the tank the more issues is my experience. Keep in mind though this fish is a nightmare to catch and remove

Very good advice here, they try to be mean but if you buy it small it will keep to its self IME. I've had one in all my tanks.

I have one that looks like a little stripey football. I have had this fish for 4 years or so. in that time It has been a model citizen compared to the rest of my finned friends. This fish started off in my 180 and while I remember chasing a new addition once or twice, I dont remember what it was. Last July (14) I downsized into my current 66 gallon system and brought my football across. in the smaller tank, I have not had a single issue with this dude. NONE. I recently added a pair of Lyretail anthias and the wrasse didnt notice. However, my Tiny striated tang went ballistic on them for almost 3 weeks before settling into a peaceful existence.

Flip a coin.. I have had a couple over the years with a clown pair in a 25 gal both have been laid back. I introduced the six line after the clowns. The one I currently have is larger than my clowns and is mostly peaceful he even breaks up fights between the two clowns.

Those with smaller tanks who want a wrasse but the tank size isn't suitable for the larger genera (fairys and flashers) should consider either the pink streak wrasse or possum wrasses.
