My Tank Thread
Newer ones are designed to fail off. The older style were notorious for failing on.Everything is on gfci. Don't they fail from time to time?
In fact, the newer ones have a self check so they will open if they fail. If you can't reset it with nothing plugged in, it's a new style that has failed.
If everything is on GFCI, the probe in your DT is optional. The only thing it would possibly protect you from is if your return pump was off and you had your hand in the tank the moment a powerhead failed. If you can add it and make it look nice, go for it. Doesn't hurt to have it. If you can't make it look nice, don't worry about it. You will still be better protected than the majority of aquarium owners.
It led to a very lively discussion.
