Hey guys,

I want to get some advice. I’m just finishing the setup of my 75 gallon. I am in need of some stocking ideas. I talked with my LFS and they told me what I want to do will work but I want to get opinions from people who aren’t trying to sell to me.

(1) Clownfish
(1) Lawnmower Blenny
(1) Coral Beauty Angel
(1) Reef Butterfly (Chaetodon sedentarius)

After those I’m not really sure. My LFS mentioned maybe a square back anthias and a one spot Foxface. The one spot fox face is my favorite fish and I desperately want to put one in this tank!

Clownfish, Coral Beauty will work in a 75g tank...the clowns are semi-aggressive and the coral beauty are known to go after coral, though. I'm not familiar with the Reef Bufferfly fish, though.

As for the Lawnmower Blenny -- this is a fish to add much later after you have a healthy growth of regular algae. These poor things starve to death all the time due to lack of food in newer systems.

I hate to be the one to break the news to you, but a 75g is too small for a Foxface. These grow very large...

Agree with @Idoc The foxface is a risk in a tank this size....may not flourish. Somebody gonna come bite our heads off with a pic of 5 of em in a 75 just to spite though lol....
As for the CB , I have one and a mostly softie coral dominant tank, no issues, but always the chance of a nip at that one prized coral you recently purchased ...
My advise, is plenty of rockwork if you set on the CB. It will need hiding places, and rock to feed off rather than corals....and feed regular.
Best of luck.

Hey a fellow buckeye!!

My biggest issue is I already have the CB, butterfly, and the lawnmower Blenny in the 40 gallon I am transferring to the 75. I had the 40 setup at my parents house but I just purchased my first house….. so why not upgrade the tank too right!?

I had a feeling the Foxface would be too big. LA and my LFS swear that it will be okay in anything (70+). I actually had a small one in my 40 but he got an internal parasite and unfortunately didn’t make it, which is why I desperately want to replace him.

Do you have any other ideas on bigger “showpiece” fish I could do?

You could do a bristletooth tang. Any of the bristletooth species stay small enough to be happy in a 75 for their entire life.

I own a Siganus magnificus… 4’x2’x2’ tank, I have owned one in a 3’x2’x2’ tank too for the same amount of time. Do they use all the space as much as others say? Nope. They hover around much more than people think. I kept the Foxface in a 3’ tank for two years, when I upgraded to the tank I have now he died from ammonia and got swapped with a bigger one after the cycle. These guys are slow growers too so do they can be kept in smaller tanks. I’d recommend either magnificus or bicolor’s because of their smaller size compared to the other three (Yes, three, There’s a Tongan one that was recently discovered in the past few years). I think by the time it gets to 4.5-5” you’ll be at grow out size but any smaller should be alright 860995D3-DD07-4239-AB45-41089C79194C.jpeg

Are we on about a 4’x2’x2’ tank? If it’s a 3’ then bristletooths are out of the picture, these guys are way to active for only 3’ long tanks. Mine is constantly using every corner and inch of my 4’ tank so isn’t a great candidate. A wrasse such as a leopard, fairy, flasher, Halichoeres will be a great showpiece fish.

The tank is 48x18x21

That’s a beautiful fish! I’m hoping to do a one spot, I believe they are the smallest, right?

Check out Starki damsel. It’s not like other damsels, this guy is reef safe and mine is a model citizen. People tend to stay away from him because he’s a damsel but if you do a little research you’ll see he’s different.

Actually, S. magnificus are the smallest of the 5. I believe the rest get 8.5”-10” whereas S. magnificus sticks to 8”. I find S. magnificus to be nicer looking and not with the “Basic” yellow colours. I may be completely wrong with this though however I have found mine to stop growing at 5” so I think he’ll stay around 5-6”

I find the magnificent is the same size as the One spot at max size, but also the magnificent seems to be the one that hovers more. I can’t say anything about the Tongan Foxface because it’s so rare and never been in a video from what I know. I’ve seen bicolor foxes and they do the similar movements as the magnificent, I have seen the two commons to be more of a swimmer than a hovering fish.

I stay away from these guys because they’re not what they look like in photos (Or Atleast not the ones I’ve seen), I think if you want a damsel sure these are perfect (Well, any chrystipera damsel is good).

Really? I've always thought the photos don't do it justice. Mine came from Bluezooaquatics. Can't seem to find any pics of him on my phone. Will post one later.

I’ve never seen one that looks like a photo of them, the ones I see are all dull even a week after being in the shop.
