91L tank?

It all depends on the fishes you keep but IMO 4 would be your max

4?? really? No disrespect @James M but in my 56L (which is way too small compared to this 91L tank) I have 6 fish without any aggravation or ammonia issues. But I'm planning to upgrade so that my fish will have more space.

Can we get a more realistic number please? I really need a realistic/practical number here and not a theory amount because I'm gonna spend nearly $700 getting this new tank.

Thank you #reefsquad in advance.

I do not know why you are surprised. I think four is actually a lot. That is less than 15 gallons for those of us in the US.

EDIT. I misread, it is about 23 gallons. Four seems about right. I have 3 fish in a 45 gallon and it is full to me.

wait.. just to get things straight.. in a 91L tank which is 24 US gallon I can only keep 4 fish? well I'm sorry but I don't quite agree with that......

In my 45 AIO (the display is about 30 gallons) I have a tiny A. ocellaris (1”, will max at 3”), a Midas Blenny (3”, max at 5”) and a Pink Streaked Wrasse (1.5”, max at 2.5”). Judging by their behaviors and territories, I could maybe add one more fish later. Maybe. No one right now is acting aggressive and everyone has their own space. I would not want to disrupt that balance really. The best thing is to add fish slowly. One at a time, and see how everyone adjusts. I added the ocellaris last and it took about two weeks for everyone’s behavior to adjust to him.

@NY_Caveman I appreciate your reply, and thank you for the guidance.

It all depends I guess... I can confirm that you can add more fishes than that. Because I'm a living proof that if you maintain your tank properly with proper mineral dosing/regular water change you can keep around 4-6 Fishes in a 15G tank.

My existing one is a 15 Gallon tank and I have these livestocks :

Fishes :

- 02 Amphiprion ocellaris
- 01 Bicolor dottyback
- 01 Yellow Gobi
- 01 Six line wrasse
- 01 Blue Damselfish

Cleaning crew :

- 03 Cerith snails
- 03 Nassarius snails
- 02 Astrea snails
- 01 blue legged hermit crab
- 01 peppermint shrimp
- 01 fire red shrimp

Corals :

- 01 Hammer
- 03 Zoanthids
- 01 Leather
- 01 Green Star Polyps

They are very healthy. If I had a 30 Gallon tank I will keep at least 6-8 fishes for sure.

IMO - 45 gallon is to small for even 1 A. ocellaris. This mean that you can´t decide how many fishes you can have without knowing what species and how they interact with others. I can hav 0 tang but maybe 15 small gobies.

In my 80 gallon tank - I have around 40 fishes without any problems an I have still niches that I have not filled up yet

Sincerely Lasse

Definitely depends on the fish. That 15 gallon is way overstocked by my estimate. When those fish reach adult size it will be quite unfair for them. You have four types of fish that tend to increase aggression as they age. To each their own, but way overstocked by my estimate.

Sorry @Lasse just trying to understand. Why you think I can't even add 1A to 45gallon tank? I'm asking this because in my small 15g I have 2A.ocellaris

Anyways now the issue is not 45g. Main question got diverted somehow.

I'm planning to get 91L = 24 gallon tank. So just planning practically how many small fishes I can have. I don't have any plans to keep tangs, foxface all. Personally I'm not a tangs person. So I'll be having small fishes only. Max 2inch ?

Thank you. I will try and separate them or give them to my friends

I keep 5 fish in a 22gallon long and I would not add more than the 5 I have, I doubt it would work out.

I have: Two clowns, damsel, dottyback, sixline so similar stock to yours. These fish get more aggressive as they age so I can't imagine them working in that 15 gallon for their lifespan. I think its working okay in my 22g since the tank is long and they each have their own 'spot'. Could change any day though.

Number of fish just depends, a green banded goby or a clown goby is a lot less bioload than a clownfish.

I do think it would be difficult to add any fish to your current stock. Those are aggressive fish so new fish would need to be aggressive enough to defend themselves. Adding a peaceful fish like a firefish goby would eventually lead to disaster imo.

I have a different 25g I am planning on 5 fish.

So I guess 5 fish max gets my vote with careful stocking.

By the way nopox isn't some wonder drug. If it were that easy to keep nitrate and phos low we would all use it. It is carbon dosing and has its own set of possible screw ups and effects. It causes the bacteria to multiply faster and take up no3 and po4. This also can deplete oxygen and a bloom suffocate your fish. Proceed with caution... I personally would not recommend it to a new person in the hobby.

@sam20e i think you already have your mind set so i am not sure why you are even asking a question....
It's not that my mind is set. When I first bought my 15g nano I didn't ask anyone how many fish I can add. So that's my 1st mistake. Now I'm going to upgrade my tank so I was asking what is the max number of small livestocks I can add.
But the answer I received not tallying with my current situation.
My thinking was ok 15g I can have 4small fish so 24g may be I can have 6 small fish. So just yo confirm that amount I asked the question. But when people say I cannot even add 4 fish means I'm finding it super difficult to believe.

I'm not trying to be rude or anything like that. I'm still very new and learning. So pls accept my apologies if I sounded rude or something like that

@Dr. Reef suggested you were looking for someone to reinforce a bad decision. That is what it was seeming like to me as well. That aside, and so I do not sound rude either, I would suggest approaching it from a different angle. Post a list of specific fish you want to keep in the tank and ask folks to share an opinion. For marine tanks there is just no easy rule or way to say x number of fish works in x size tank like folks do with fresh water. The possible behaviors, bioloads and general requirements of marine fish is just too wide of a range to give general advice on stocking limits.

I agree. I also agree that even though for now it seems ok when they grow it could be a problem.

I really appreciate all your feedback I think I'm not gonna add anymore even when I upgrade. I'll advertise and give away 2 of those aggressive one. I don't want to see any territorial fights LoL

i agree @NY_Caveman
OP sounded like needing a person to reinforce. anyways i dont think anyone is being rude in anyways here. I think its a bit of misunderstanding and best if you can list the fish you feel like keeping in the 24 g tank and then we can weed out the wrong one's and get you into tank that s full of life and fish.

thank you @Dr. Reef @NY_Caveman and @Tamberav you guys convinced me that I shouldn't add anymore. So my mind is set now. I'm going to give away my six line Six Line Wrasse and Bicolor Dottyback. That way I can reduce my current bioload and at the same time I don't have to rush and get a 24G.

Thanks guys.

I always calculate with the size the fish have as adult and their demand for territory when reaching mature age. IMO grown up clowns need at least 50 gallons (200 litres ) But that IMO.

Sincerely Lasse
