95% Water Change? Check out the video!

Reef Builders shared this article today and I thought it was pretty cool and wanted to share. I would also like to point out that I like the little PVC drain tool that he is using. Gives me an idea! HA!

This guy does a 95% water change and replaces with water straight from the reefs!

You would think that would stress out the corals.

I think the key is that he is using NATURAL sea water. I would not advocate doing this with synthetic saltwater.

i had read that actually by exposing the corals too air they make this protective slime that helps protect against parasite

I would think as long as the water is premixed and heated it would not harm anything even if it was home made salt water

My new LFS setup their whole store with natural sea water and I'm a believer now, some of the corals really seemed to respond to it.

Hmmm do you guys think it would also depend on the beach you get it from? Idk I think sea water is great but what about the pollutants, bacteria or parasites? Any thoughts?

I have to much $$$ into my tanks to trust sea water lol ill stick with my fake saltwater i like the control i have over it and knowing whats in it

There's companies that sale it that run it through filtration before it gets sold.

you have to get the water from offshore in deeper water for it to have less pollutants.

Considering all the reefs in nature that are declining/dying off I think you are on to something.

I just want to re-enforce this….this is for NATURAL SALTWATER PEOPLE ONLY. If you use “synthetic” salt (ie, powdered salt), you don’t want to do this large a water change.


AND, FYI, natural saltwater water changes is common in states like Florida. There are companies that make a business out of pulling their water trucks to the end of a pier, sucking up ocean water, and using it to do water changes.
