A 40b upgrade project

That frag is still about the same, so I’m thinking it’s mostly adjusting. Skimmer is back on and pulling some nasty funk now. The sump is getting some nasty algae growing, a little bit of cyano in the display. Nothin to worry too much about.
I can finally see all my Wd’s colors front on, so that’s cool. My palmer’s blue is finally blue again, too.

Great looking system. How do you like the Photon V2 on this tank. I just finished my 40B, but have not decided on a light for it yet. I am considering the 32" Photon V2+ for mine as well.

I really like the light so far. It’s well built, has the quality feel. Looks great suspended over the tank in my opinion. At 17” off the water I currently run it @ 10/10/90/15/90/90, and love the look inside the tank. It’s a crisp icey blue. My Walt Disney’s coloration imo is even better now than it was under the prime 16+ a80 combo in the old tank. The wd is kind of my barometer for the light’s performance lol.

The one annoying thing about the light is that it flickers. It’s the type of driver(pmw?) it uses. You’ll never see it with the naked eye, but taking pictures or video can get annoying when the frame rate/shutter is off of its frequency.
It’s pretty easily worked around, so it’s a very small grip.

Overall, would definitely suggest.

Saw your post and is exactly what I am currently working on. Just waiting for petco $1/gal sale. 40b/20l. What return pump are you using also about how much did you spend on plumbing if you don’t mind me asking. This will be my first saltwater tank so I’m tryna get as much info possible

I’m using a simplicity dc1600 as my return, lowest setting with an rfg. I think I ended up spending around $150 on the plumbing? All one inch pipes and fittings.

What do you think helped with it?
Probably changing the main sock more frequently and staying consistent with maintenance. But mostly time. I think the dino->cyano was more or less a symptom of the newer setup figuring itself out while the established rocks helped it along.

i also just swapped to a klir di-4, so no more worrying about socks for me!

Where do you buy your corals? My 40 is about ready to stock. Going to stock with fish and keep it dark for a few months, per BRS videos. It's getting harder to stay patient after looking at your tank!!

That’s a good idea, let it get really established. I get all of my stuff locally, between a couple different lfs. I trade frags in here and there to help with cost. Frag swaps or shows are great to get top shelf stuff cheaper, though right now not really realistic. My local club is still having meetings, another good way to pick up cheap frags, but I can’t say that I trust people enough to be collectively responsible in that setting for me to go.

Well. I’ve wanted something that will make use of the open space of the tank. A tang’s off the table, but I rolled the dice on a small female anthias. The tank is fed 3 times a day now, and with the fleece roller/skimmer I’m not super worried about feeding enough/export. As long as she doesn’t get aggressive I’ll keep her. So far the wrasse has displayed at her, and holy smokes he looks cool when he’s flashing for real. Other than that, it’s been pretty cordial.

The anthias is eating like a pig! Carpenter wrasse seems to be more accepting now. Also picked up a red planet, I’ve wanted one for a long time. WD is going strong!

My poor little red planet rtn’d a few nights ago. I fragged off some pieces, right now it looks like 2 of them might make it. The store I got it from had one of them left when I stopped by, and it was also losing tissue.

Picked up a forest fire digi today as well as some more snails. I’d love to find some black footed trochus snails locally but no luck. Dunno where I’m gonna put the digi, it’s in the frag-fuge for now, dropped a jebao slw-10 in there. I need to frag up my fireworks cloves.

See you have a jebao slw-10. Would you recommend 2 of them for a 40b or increase to 2 slw-20s

Ohhh, I don’t know if they’d have enough punch to be honest, depending on what you want to keep I guess. Imo they have the tendency to lose some flow quickly as well if you don’t clean them frequently. I would either go for the larger ones or check out the rp-m’s

Building tank for soft and lps. So you’d recommend the slw-20 over slw-10

I’m finally upgrading my Innovative Marine 14 gallon peninsula. It’s been running for 3 years, so planning to break it down is a bit bittersweet. But, it’s time.

We’re moving on up to a 40 breeder with a 20 long sump! And a whole lot of diy. So far, I have built the stand, installed the Fiji Cube baffles into my sump. Got a loooooong ways to go. I think next up will be putting together an electronics/equipment panel and drilling/plumbing.

How’s that skimmer working? Would you recommend it. Doing the same exact build 40/20

The skimmer is great! I’ll say it’s definitely not super quiet, but it pulls really nice, dark skimmate consistently. It does still let out some micro bubbles, but those don’t even make it out of the skimmer chamber. I would buy it again for sure.
