My nitrates currently hover between 0 and 1 and my zoas are suffering. Im about to start dosing stump remover, but Im not sure at what rate. Should I try to raise the nitrates by 1ppm per day or all at once to get it near 5?

I have no experience with that material
(Stump remover)
But as always in reef tanks: change things slowly.
I would start with not more than a 1mg/l dose per day.

Measure the next day. Maybe your tanks micro biology has reduced the +1mg/l already again then.

Then decide about your next doses.

Im sure you'll get a better answer, but I would gander a guess and say slower is better.

I started every other day with a test at end of second day until I worked out consumption rates for daily dosing.

My DT and sump is about 90G
So I will mix 10 grams of spectracide stump remover in with a liter of rodi. Then add 45ml every two days while measuring nitrate levels to see how it goes. Does that sound like a good plan?

I doubt it matters. :)

Sounds fine. :)

Doubt it matters for the amount of nitrates in the tank for the zoas or doubt it matters dosing 5ppm or 1ppm over time? (Sorry, still new to this)

The rate of boost to your final choice likely makes no noticeable difference. :)

I dose Potassium nitrate to my tank as well. At first your going to have to figure out with a ton of dosing and testing just how much it's going to take you to raise from let's say 0ppm to 5ppm. Unless you can get more accurate then that....

I made my solution up. Then took one gallon of RODI water. Kept adding my Potassium Nitrate solution to it until I reached a 5ppm goal.

I know my approx water volume in my tank so I dosed 50% of my solution to raise to 5ppm and tested the water. I didn't register anything on the test so the next day I added the rest of the dose. Still nothing. So either my tank what eating up my Nitrate fast or I did something wrong. It took a few days of adding before my nitrates became detectable. Since then I've been adding about 10ml of the solution to keep it stable.

Ok, cool. I'll keep a chart and post the results here!

I'm going to measure 3 times today (why not!), and try to do daily measurements and dosing

I mixed 20 grams of the stump remover into 2 Liters. I added 225ml today which should raise the nitrate level by 4.1ppm in my 90G (total volume between DT and sump)
(by the way, can I insert tables in this forum?)

Nitrate Levels
8/5 15:00 : < 1ppm (undetectable)
8/5 15:30 : Added 4.1ppm nitrate
8/5 18:00 : 2ppm

8/6 00:00 : 2ppm
8/6 00:15 : Added 150ml (2.7ppm) nitrate

Use this calculator to make your solution.

Make a custom solution and getting to where you want to go is an exact science. I made a concentrated solution because I didn't want to mess with a huge gallon jug. I dissolved 232 grams KNO3 in 1L so that 5ml would raise the nitrates in my 180 gallon tank by 1ppm. I dosed 10ml and tested an hour later. It was exactly 2ppm.

If the calculator is correct that's the best way to go. A lot easier to do.

That calculator is great! Luckily looks like I got my math right.

I'll keep posting results for science haha and until it's stable.
At the moment, the zoas and xenias actually look worse :(

I changed my carbon too, it was about a month old.

Tuesday I'll bring the water to the LFS to rule out user/test errors

will be following along! I just got my KNO3 in today and was trying to calculate my dose also.. I only have a 30g tank but went with 10g into a 20oz bottle. 10ml should raise me 1ppm
