Acans dead? Or just retracted?

It was already retracted before the water change that’s why I did it

So the drop in nutrients might not have helped, but it surely didn't cause it.

It was about a 30% but I cleaned out my filters also which had all the nutrients
Since all this happened before the wc im thinking’s it’s the shrimp now or the nitrates but that one acan looks totally gone it was orange and blue I see no color at all it was probably eaten. But my other acan I’ve seen it retract like that before n it came back so I’ll give it time. Shrimp might have to go anyone want it!?

The way I understand it, cleaning the filters would affect the bacteria. The nutrients are in the water. Have you checked ammonia and nitrites just to see.

@Hemmdog would it even be possible to go from 20 ppm nitrates to 0 with a 30% water change? I feel like something had to be incorrect on one end or the other.

Honestly... I'm super suspicious of all pm shrimp now. :D Granted it's based on my limited one time experience, so take it as you will.... I guess you can call me a pms conspiracy theorist now. (Coming up with that literally made me laugh out loud! I amuse myself tooooo easily!)

Seems unlikely. Maybe if you did that and dosed waste away or Nopox. 0 is hard to get.

My LFS owner said it COULDN'T be the pms. He said it's totally reef safe. But all my corals were retracting and then I actually CAUGHT it eating a blasto after she had finished the acans. (I seriously considered having a shrimp tacos for dinner that night.) I kept my acan skeleton in the tank.... cause I was too depressed to remove it. I'm glad I did, because, as you see, it started growing back.

Hopefully it was just an angry pms and yours will grow back if you get rid of it.

No dosing of anything.
It’s a mystery why it happened before hand but def doing all the water change didn’t help so now I have to let it stabilize again and I’m getting phytoplankton tomorrow to feed. I have seen my peppermint shrimp go on corals just not the acans so Idk but he’s a goner.

Also very strange if you look on my tank picture on the bottle left there is a little cave where my fire fish loved to go and he hung out wit the peppermint shrimp there. In all of the time I’ve had my fire fish he neverrrrr left that area. Now since this mystery has happened he’s found a new place to live and is on the other side of the tank which I neve seen him do so maybe the shrimp kicked him out?? Is that even possible!?

I wonder if the shrimp has eggs. Mine did. The LFS saw them when I brought it back. Perhaps they get possessive and super hungry when reproducing... would make sense, but I know next to nothing about peppermint shrimp.

Me either there’s no other shrimp in there but him/her idk but I’ll be needed new acans soon and a shrimp will be gone

All parameters are good calcium can be higher it’s 380 right now I’ll be switching salt to reef crystals I was using instant ocean salt..I also just moved them further down in the tank l. They have thrived for the most part where they were before about 110par.

If it's not bleach white, it has life in it.

What test kits do you use? What are your water parameters readings, phosphate, nitrate, calcium, alkalinity, magnesium, salinity, and temperature?

API reef kit. Phosphate 0. Nitrate now 0, calcium 380. Mag idk don’t have a test. Salinity 1.023. Temp 78

They do not like high flow. They will tend to close up when they receive direct flow. If water parameters haven't changed and livestock isn't walking or brushing up against it.
One they begin to open feed them regularly for optimal growth.

Are you feeding these guys? I try to feed mine everyday or they start to look really bad and shriveled. They’re a coral that can’t really thrive if they’re not being fed.

I’d feed after lights out so the fish will be asleep and less likely to pick the food out of their mouths and keep an eye out to make sure the shrimp doesn’t come creeping.
